Congress MP Maya Rai has been arrested by the police. Rai was arrested on Saturday night by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office to investigate the crime of misappropriation of funds of Swarnalakshmi Savings and Loan Cooperative in Kalimati.

Head of the office SSP Ramesh Basnet said that Rai was arrested from his house in Kapan. "We are conveying the police premises to Kathmandu," he said, "It was recommended to prosecute Rai for misappropriation of the funds of Swarnalakshmi Cooperative located in Kalimati."

A case of fraud and organized crime was filed against 39 people including Gurkha Media Chairman Gitendrababu (GB) Rai, then Managing Director Ravi Lamichhane and former DIG of Nepal Police Chabilal Banjade Joshi in the charge of misappropriating the savings of Swarnalakshmi Cooperative. Swarnalakshmi's 690 savers filed a complaint saying that they were defrauded of 1 billion 1949 million 21 thousand 270 rupees.  During the

investigation, a total of 5 thousand 669 savers of Swarnalakshmi were prosecuted with the conclusion that 2 billion 65 crore 95 lakh 59 thousand 58 rupees were systematically defrauded.  When the

case was prosecuted, 34 people including the main accused GB Rai were absconding. It is mentioned in the indictment that from Swarnalakshmi to shareholders, various profit-making companies and unauthorized persons, money was illegally taken and embezzled on various dates.  At that time, Rai was not made a defendant. After the

, the public prosecutor's office instructed to investigate him, and the police obtained an arrest warrant from the court. Rai was elected central member from tribal quota in the 14th Congress. She is a proportional member of parliament who is in the party chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba's group.

In the Swarnalakshmi cooperative fraud case, the Kathmandu District Court ordered Lamichhane to be released on a bond of Rs 60 lakh. Similarly, another accused Joshi was also ordered to be released on bail of Rs 50 lakh by the court.
