Industry, Commerce and Supply Minister Damodar Bhandari has said that the government is preparing to advance Nepal's intellectual property laws in a new way.

Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of 'Intellectual Property Day' in Kathmandu on Saturday, he said that new laws are needed in Nepal regarding global intellectual property, adding that the government is in the process of creating laws to protect patent rights by codifying matters related to Nepali originality.

He said that the law related to intellectual property which is under discussion in the committee is being prepared to be introduced in the Parliament after the decision of the Council of Ministers soon.

He says that the current law on patent rights is only solving complaints about related issues. He said that some countries behind Nepal have benefited from the world market by securing patent rights.

He says that there is a problem in Nepal's laws related to intellectual property due to the different understanding of the businessmen and the government and the different interpretations of the courts.

He said, 'businessmen recognize it in one way, the government in another way and the court in a third way, has created a legal dilemma. Therefore, we want to advance Nepal's intellectual property and industrial property legal framework in a new way in the current environment. Now, after a long discussion in the cabinet committee, we are preparing to form a sub-committee and soon make a decision in the cabinet and bring it to the parliament, so that it can solve the problem in this area. There is no need to get stuck just looking at the complaints we have received.'

Minister Bhandari said that even though an organization was opened and introduced in the name of some intellectual property created by the ancestors, no one paid attention to protect patent rights.

He said that when he copied foreign designs and patents and sent them to the market, he was lagging behind in his own inventions, designs and products. He said that there are many topics related to the culture left by the ancestors for patent rights. He says that there is a problem when some patent rights are registered and not renewed.
