Due to the lack of official documents, Nepalis continue to come to the country after being 'deported' from America
63 Nepali citizens have been deported since Donald Trump assumed the second term of the US President. The American government has returned them in stages and entrusted them to the immigration office at Tribhuvan International Airport.
Since Trump's second term began on January 22, the United States has launched a campaign to deport immigrants living without official documents. One Nepali was expelled on the first day itself. According to the Immigration Office, 63 Nepalis, including 7 women and 56 men, have been returned to the United States since January 22. According to the immigration, Nepalis continue to come from America after being 'deported'.
According to immigration data, America has 'deported' 6 Nepalis in January, 20 in February, 30 in March and 7 in April (as of Thursday). According to Airport Immigration Chief Tirtharaj Bhattarai, 8 of those who were 'deported' arrived in Nepal at once on February 21 by chartered ship and 55 others by regular flight. Airport immigration has been handing over documents to those who have been 'deported' to the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police for further questioning.
According to the airport immigration and Nepal police, most of the people who were deported are those who have entered the US through various countries in Asia, Europe and Africa and reached the South American country of Mexico by paying large sums of money to the human traffickers. Most of them are from West/East Rukum, Rolpa, Pyuthan, Dang, Arghakhanchi. It has been found that they have reached the US by handing over 5 million to 1 crore rupees to brokers.
Those who reached the US through human traffickers did not tell the police about the gang's 'network'. "We are trying to see if we can reach the human trafficking gang through them," said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dipendra GC, head of Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau, "but they don't want to open up." Most of them have only told about the route, expenses and what happened in America.'
The Trump administration has launched a campaign to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants including Nepal through 'Immigration and Customs Enforcement' (ICE). Earlier, 140 Nepalis were expelled from America from 2021 to 2024. According to the Immigration Department, 38 Nepalis were deported by the US in 2021, 24 in 2022, 25 in 2023 and 53 in 2024. More than 3,500 Nepalese have been ordered to be deported. It is estimated that about 2,000 Nepalis are living in the US under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The Nepali Embassy in Washington DC is coordinating to bring those who have been deported to Nepal by making a 'travel document'.
