Two separate memorandums of understanding on cultural and tourism cooperation have been signed between the governments of Nepal and Thailand. Apart from that, 6 different memorandums of understanding have been signed between the non-governmental parties.
During Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's visit to Thailand on Wednesday, a total of 8 memorandums of understanding were signed between the two parties, both governmental and non-governmental. Before participating in the BIMSTEC summit, Prime Minister Oli paid an official visit to Thailand at the invitation of the government. A bilateral meeting was held between Prime Minister Oli and Thai Prime Minister Paitong Tarn Shinawatra.
Similarly, Prime Minister Oli also had a courtesy meeting with King Bajiralonghorn of Thailand. There was a meeting with the King at Amphorn Palace in Bangkok. Spokesperson and joint secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Krishna Dhakal, informed that there were discussions at the Prime Minister's level regarding cooperation between the two countries on multilateral issues including tourism, culture, economy, trade and aviation.
In a joint press conference held in Bangkok after the meeting with Shinawatra, Prime Minister Oli expressed his belief that cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism, education, and energy will increase during his visit. He said that despite the 65-year-old diplomatic relationship with Thailand, he felt honored to be able to make the first official visit on behalf of Nepal.
He mentioned that his visit will further strengthen diplomatic and people-to-people relations between the two countries. He also expressed hope for Thailand's investment in Nepal's tourism, hotel business and aviation services. He has invited Thai investors to invest in Nepal.
In a press conference, Prime Minister Shinawatra of Thailand promised to increase investment in the tourism and aviation sector of Nepal. She mentioned that the number of air flights at Gautam Budh International Airport and the number of flights of Thai Airlines in Kathmandu are positive.
After 65 years of the expansion of diplomatic relations, she expressed her happiness that the first historic visit of the Prime Minister of Nepal took place. She emphasized that she is committed to working together through BIMSTEC to strengthen relations with Nepal. She expressed her belief that Thailand's investment and trade in Nepal's energy, hotel, aviation and tourism sectors will be prioritized in the future.
According to the Public Relations Department of the Government of Thailand, the two leaders discussed cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, healthcare, tourism and service industry. He said that the possibility of increasing the trade volume of 40 million US dollars with Nepal in the future will be taken into consideration.
Thai businessmen will be encouraged to enter Nepal's market, she said. He said in the joint press conference that the two leaders set the goal of increasing cooperation in the spiritual sector in the future, apart from tourism and medicine. The Prime Ministers of the two countries also witnessed the signing of 8 different agreements related to that subject. Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba and Thai Culture Minister Sudhawan Wangsuphakijkosal signed the memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation.
Likewise, Deuba and Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong have signed a memorandum of understanding on tourism cooperation. Apart from that, in the non-governmental sector, Federation of Commerce and Industry, Confederation of Nepal Industry, Nepal Chamber of Commerce, Kathmandu University, Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh have signed separate agreements with various non-governmental sectors of Thailand.
