A container of electronic cigarettes (Vape) brought by Shilk Transport from China has been stored in the Tatopani customs warehouse.

980 cartons of vape have been placed in the customs warehouse at the request of the transporter as the vape does not pass inspection. Tatopani Customs Officer and Information Officer Surya Kafle informed that the carton containing vape was protected and stored in the warehouse.

According to him, at the request of Shilk Trans, the vape was kept in its own warehouse and given protection. The owner of the vape has not been identified. The customs source said, "Until the importer or the person who buys and imports makes a claim, it is the responsibility of the transporter." Two weeks ago, about 900 vape that entered through Tatopani border crossing were seized by the Bahrbise Police Force and the Armed Police Force Lamosanghu while coming to Kathmandu via the Arani Highway and handed over to the Revenue Investigation Department.

In December last year, the Revenue Investigation Department seized 86,000 pieces of vapes that did not pass customs inspection from Silkk Transport's warehouse in Imadol, Kathmandu. Revenue released the warehouse workers who were arrested along with VEP with a bank guarantee of 20.16 million last February.

The department informed that the management of the bank guarantee was arranged by SHILK employee Vijay Sherpa. Ramesh Sherpa is the Chairman of Shilk Group. Sheelk Company has been mainly engaged in the transportation of commercial goods from China. Shareholder Shilk is one of the private sector companies responsible for the management of customs warehouses. Vape was also placed in a container by Sheelk and brought into Tatopani customs on Sunday.

Vape used to be legally imported until the last financial year. In the last fiscal year, more than 230 million was collected from vape imported from Rasuwa and Tatopani, which is connected to China. Based on the correspondence sent by the Ministry of Health in last Baisakh, the customs have not been able to pass the inspection of the vape.

The Department of Commerce, which allows import-export, has not imposed any restrictions. Based on the correspondence of the Ministry of Health, the examination pass has been stopped. The revenue officials say that the thefts have increased since the inspection was stopped.

A major consequence of imported vape is that it goes to India through the southern border and because it is illegally exported, vape is recovered from the border crossings of Terai. Lately, vape has been stolen from the Karola border of Mustang. Police seized 19,000 vape from Mustang last December.
