The 17th edition of Shahid Bhimnarayan Gold Cup will be played today (Monday) afternoon between Boys Football Club Itahari and Gaighat Football Club Udaipur.

Organized by Shaheed Bhimnarayan Memorial Foundation, Dhankuta, the competition has been going on since Sunday. Eight teams including 'A' division are participating in the competition which is being conducted in the lower end of Dhankuta market. In the

competition, along with the host team, there are Namobuddha Youth Football Club, Chitlang Football Club Kathmandu, Virtamode United Jhapa, Boys Football Club Itahari, Gaighat Football Club Udaipur, Belbari Football Club Morang and the departmental team APF Club Kathmandu. 

The organizer Shahid Bhimnarayan Smriti Dhankuta was eliminated from the competition from the first day's match. Saptari's Namobuddha Youth Club secured the place by winning the first day's match. The organizer said that the game will be conducted from four o'clock in the afternoon today. 

The winner will receive a cash prize of 5 lakhs and the runner-up will receive a trophy medal, cup and certificate along with 250,000 rupees. Similarly, the highest scorer, man of the match and best player will also get cash prizes. Purendralal Shrestha, president of Shaheed Bhimnarayan Shrestha Memorial Foundation, said that the competition, which started in 2055, has been running regularly since 2063 after a few years of postponement.

The competition is being conducted in memory of martyr Bhimnarayan Shrestha, who was sentenced to death in 2035 for throwing a bomb at the then King Birendra Shah. Shrestha has been declared a martyr by the government in 2074.
