The rate of out-migration is increasing

In one decade, 32 percent of citizens have migrated from the hills, while 28.9 percent have migrated from the plains. The National Statistics Office on Tuesday released five thematic reports based on the National Census 2078 with the title Internal Migration in Nepal. In which there is a mention about such trend of migration.

The office has released a report on Internal Migration, International Migration, Fertility, Demographic Dividend and Population Projections in Nepal, 2021-2051 . In the report, the proportion of people leaving their native place and migrating within Nepal is 29.2 percent. Only 6 percent migrated to hilly areas in 2028. Which is constantly increasing in the following years.  Dhundriraj Lamichhane, Deputy Chief Statistics Officer and Spokesperson of the

office, said that the highest permanent internal migration population is in the mountains and said that 13.8 percent of the citizens migrated from the Himalayan region. Among those who migrated, 25.9 percent migrated as dependents, 24.9 percent migrated due to marriage and 19 percent migrated due to job opportunities, he said. In the

report, it is mentioned that Gandaki province has the highest number of people migrating from one province to another. Similarly, due to the trend of permanent migration, 18 districts out of 77 districts have lost 20 percent of the population born in the said district.

In the report on the situation of international migration in Nepal, it is mentioned that while the migration trend of Nepal was 3.3 percent in 2058, after two decades, such population was 7.5 percent in 2078. It is also mentioned that more than three quarters of the absentee population in the country i.e. 75.8 percent are in the age group of 15 to 34 years. In the

report, about one-fourth of the families with at least one member absent abroad have a fixed house. These figures show that it is not only the poor who are leaving the country. Similarly, in the report, among the absentees in the country, the share of at least one member from the family living in a semi-fixed house is absent abroad is around 20 percent.

In Nepal, the working population has a higher ratio than the dependent population, active age group means 65.2 percent of the working age population is included in the report .

Spokesperson Lamichhane informed that the rate of population growth in the Terai region is high compared to other places and said that the Terai cannot survive if the population increases at this rate. The public report has predicted that the fertility rate of the country as a whole will also decrease.

Nepal's Population Projection, 2021-2051 Report has also predicted that Nepal's population will be around 33.5 million in the year 2108. At that time, it is projected that 48 people will be dependent on 100 people of working age group .

It is also estimated in this report that the population returning to the country will increase in 2108 compared to 2078. In the report, the number of people coming from abroad was 9 thousand 114 in 2078, and it is projected that this number could be 18 thousand 353 in 2108.
