Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is going to visit Thailand on March 19. The team led by Prime Minister Oli is going to Bangkok to participate in the sixth summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multisectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvisubba Gurung informed that the visit program was approved by the cabinet meeting held on Monday.
The BIMSTEC meeting is being held in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, from March 19 to 23. Foreign Minister Arju Rana and other ministers will also participate in the meeting. During the meeting, it is also said that there will be a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders.
Nepal became a member of BIMSTEC in 2004, which was established in 1997. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand are members of BIMSTEC along with Nepal.
The fifth summit was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and in 2018, Nepal held the fourth summit. BIMSTEC is considered as a regional organization promoted by India as an alternative to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). It does not include Pakistan, Afghanistan and Maldives in SAARC.
