Jagat Prasad Aryal, a retired 84-year-old teacher of Biratnagar Municipal Corporation-12, raised 5/5 rupees and built an old age home. Devoted to the teaching profession for about 42 years, he has built a shelter for the destitute who suffer in old age and are wandering on the streets.
Through the campaign 'Rs 5 to build a house for the deprived, helpless, disabled and familyless', the shelter was built by collecting around 6.3 million donations from 492 thousand 903 people in a period of 8 years. Former teacher Aryal has built an old age home by purchasing 12 plots of land in Baluvai village located in Biratnagar Metropolitan City-8.
He went around the country asking for 5 rupees and also collected 5 rupees from the then President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. He was supported not only by people living in Nepal but also by 1,733 people living abroad. He said that Nepalis living abroad helped at the rate of five dollars. He started the campaign by asking for help without hesitation in a tin box placed behind a small bicycle. Many used to make fun of him as master. He did not expect that the society would help much, but even his relatives did not believe him, he said.
Building a shelter was not just a good deed for Aryal but a resolution, which inspired him to help the marginalized and helpless sections of the society. At present, there are about 100 abandoned, familyless and helpless elderly dependents in the ashram. His main objective is to take care of the protection and health of these elderly people. For that he has arranged all kinds of arrangements for food, accommodation and treatment. According to Aryal, after collecting five rupees, he attached the land and laid the foundation for the ashram, many Mankaris helped to build the house. Someone has taken over a room. Someone took over the building. Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has also built a room," he said. "At present, the ashram's total assets are worth around 25 million rupees. All that is in the name of the ashram.
Aryal's hard work and dedication have earned him respect and appreciation in the society today. Earlier there were many people who made fun of him, but now they honor him by organizing public events. They didn't believe me, I showed them by working. Nothing is greater than karma,' he said.
Along with the old age home, he is also building a 15-bed hospital. The main objective of the hospital is to provide free treatment to the elderly. About 35 lakh rupees have been spent on the construction of the hospital. There is still a lot of work to be done. I raised money for the construction of the hospital through public participation,' said Aryal, 'This is a hospital built by the people for the people by the people.'
Aryal has been working continuously for the service and care of the elderly in the ashram. Even after building an old age home and a hospital, he is not tired. He is now planning to build a park. While visiting his son and daughter-in-law in America, Aryal came up with a new plan to build a park while staying there. Seeing the beautiful and clean parks in America, he wants to build a similar park in the metropolis. With the plan of building 'Three-generation National Liberty Park', he is again involved in collecting support. For this, he is again active in the Rs 5 campaign and is collecting funds by sticking a tin board on his bicycle. At the age of 84, he has joined the Rs 5 campaign for the construction of the park and has collected Rs 4 lakh so far. He has also planned to purchase one bigha of land for the construction of the park.
