Nepal is grappling with the twin challenges of economic inequality and climate crisis

Concerned bodies have said that Nepal is dealing with the double challenge of economic inequality and climate crisis.

Economists and policy makers and concerned bodies at the 'Tax Justice for Urgent Climate Actions and Equitable and Just Transition' program held in the capital on Monday said that Nepal is under the challenge of economic inequality and climate crisis.

On that occasion, economist Dr. Dilliraj Khanal said that the current tax policy of Nepal is putting excessive burden on the lower income group. He noted that this would increase inequality and weaken the financial capacity needed to invest in climate mitigation strategies.

Similarly, National Assembly member Anjan Shakya said that its reform is necessary. She also said that a progressive tax system is not only a matter of equality but also a necessary condition for the sustainable development of Nepal.

The event was organized to discuss the growing inequality in Nepal and the need for progressive tax reform. In which they said that if the tax system in Nepal is not improved, inequality will increase. Not only this, he said that the current tax system of Nepal will add more burden to the poor and low-income people and provide benefits to rich and big organizations.
