The general meeting of Kasturi cooperative society in Beni, Myagdi, which was supposed to be held a week ago, has been suddenly stopped. It was revealed that the family of Rajesh Shakya, the chairman of the management committee alone, embezzled 480 million rupees from the savings of 52 million rupees accumulated in the said cooperative.
Established in the year 2066, Shakya has been the continuous chairman of the cooperative since then. The fact that his family had embezzled 48 crore rupees out of 52 crores saved in the cooperative was brought out by the report of the investigation committee.
Kasturi Cooperative Manager Lok Bahadur Pun (Lokesh) Beni is in custody pending trial on charges of embezzling funds from another Kumari Cooperative. As a result, the general meeting scheduled for last Friday could not be held. Lok Bahadur, who is the manager of both cooperatives, has been sent to prison for the preliminary investigation.
'All business managers know that the general meeting scheduled for last Friday could not be held because of Lokesh's absence,' President Shakya told Kantipur on the telephone. Shakya has promised to return the money of the savers by next Tuesday. "Out of the 48 million I have to pay, I have already paid 10 million," said Shakya, "I have submitted all the details of the payment to Beni Municipality."
A task force was formed under the coordination of Mayor Surat KC of Beni Municipality to investigate the misappropriation of cooperative savings funds. The said task force had revealed the fact that they had embezzled Rs 48 crore from the family of Chairman Shakya.
