The savers have expressed their anger that those involved in the embezzlement of the savings of Sunrise Cooperative in Bharatpur Mahanagar have not been arrested. The victims demanded that RPR federal MP Geeta Basnet, who was accused of embezzling the cooperative's savings, had been absconding for months and arrested them quickly.
The victim savers of Sunrise Cooperative filed a complaint with the Chitwan Police on December 17 last year saying that the savings were not returned and that the savings of 90 crores of the cooperative were embezzled. After the investigation, the police have named 21 people including Basnet as defendants and filed a fraud case in the Chitwan District Court. During the hearing of the case on November 4, the court ordered the four people present at that time to be detained for pre-trial detention.
Nagendra Bahadur Rimal, Yogendra Pandey, Krishna Prasad Gyawali and Dhundiraj Gautam, who were ordered to be sent to prison by the Chitwan court, were arrested and filed a case by the police in the secret co-operative fraud case of East Nawalparasi. They were also in custody pending trial in that case. Apart from those who were arrested in the case of Chhiharpe co-operative and there are also officials in Sunrise, no others have been arrested in Chitwan.
It is said that even after the case was registered, some defendants appeared in court and were released on bail. But the MP Basnet was not caught by the police first, nor has she appeared in the court after the case was filed," said Chandrakumar Shrestha, who was the former coordinator of the Sangharsh Committee formed by the victim savers. Shrestha, a grocer from Narayangadh, expressed his grief that his business was crippled when he embarked on a campaign to return savings. Our savings were neither safe nor could we run our business. A person like MP embezzled savings and did not come within the legal scope, said Shrestha.
MP Basnet is the mother-in-law of President Rimal. In his statement with the police, Rimal has said that he also bought the land in the name of his mother-in-law Basnet with the cooperative's money. In the charge sheet filed in the court, it is demanded that Basnet spend 25% of the 15 crore rupees spent on Bardia's Krishnasagar Resort by taking money from Sunrise Cooperative. It has also been demanded to pay the amount of Rs 8 crore of land bought by him along with seven others. "It is confirmed that the defendants Basnet and Sarita Gautam defrauded the shareholders and savers of Sunrise by embezzling the savings of Sunrise Savings and Loan Cooperative and purchasing land with the connivance of the defendant Dhundiraj Gautam," the indictment states.
After the Chitwan police issued an arrest warrant against Basnet, a team of police and rescuers went to Bardia. "We went to Bardia along with the police to see if the defendants along with Basnet will be arrested," said Durgalal Gurung, a saver. Savers say that they have talked to the leaders of RPP several times to help bring MP Basnet under the legal framework. Chitwan MP Vikram Pandey is also the senior vice president of RPP. Even the residents of his constituency fell victim to this fraud. There are
s. We met him three times and talked," said Gurung, who is also the current coordinator of the Sangharsh Samiti formed by the savers.
Tulsi Sapkota, a saver, complains that it is sad that there has not been an environment for justice even after complaining to the Metropolitan Municipality, police and many government agencies for almost two years. "The law is working, we have been patient that some results will come. It's been so long. Seeing that even the Parliament is challenging the legal process, the hope of getting justice is dying," said Sapkota. Chitwan police spokesperson DSP Ravindra Khanal said that the search is on for the absconding accused. "We are also searching Basnet based on information and information," he said.
Sunrise Cooperative was registered on August 11, 2066 with an office in the then Bharatpur Municipality-12. Later, Nagendra Bahadur Rimal of Gulria-5, Bardia was the chairman and was operating from 2073 with an office at Lions Chowk, Bharatpur-3. The organization also opened service centers at two other places, Chanauli and Bharatpur Bikas Chowk.
As mentioned in the indictment, it seems that 22,464 savers from the cooperative's central office Lionschowk, service centers Parvatipur, Chanauli and Bikas Chowk will have to return 906 million 6781 thousand rupees. Bharatpur Metropolitan Municipality has also formed a committee to investigate the case of Sunrise Cooperative. A seven-member committee formed under the coordination of Tejendra Khadka, former president of Chitwan District Savings and Loan Cooperative Association, is studying. More than Rs 90 crore was embezzled. We are in the final preparations to find out how much money was embezzled by the caucus,' said Khadka.
