The work of Nagadhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel has come to a standstill since Monday. The work was stopped after local residents obstructed the construction on both sides of Dhading and Kathmandu.

Some houses near the road side service station under construction towards Sisnekhola in Dhading have been damaged and the locals have demanded compensation and obstructed the work. Work has been stopped on both Tutipakha in Chandragiri in Kathmandu and Sisne river in Dhunibensi municipality in Dhading.

Senior Divisional Engineer of Nagadhunga-Tunnel Construction Project, Sanjay Panthi said that there will be a problem in completing the project within the stipulated time if there is an interruption in the construction phase. According to him, the house of the local Kalu Tamang was damaged by the flood last October. For that, a geological study has been conducted by the Development Assistance Implementation Division under the Roads Department, and further decisions will be made after the study report is received, he said.

If there is no problem in the construction, the project is ready to run vehicles through the Nagadhunga-Sisne river tunnel by October 2082. But the work has been interrupted many times.

86 percent of the tunnel construction started on November 4, 2076 has been completed. The distance of the main tunnel is 2,688 meters and the emergency tunnel is 2,557 meters. Currently, the work of lighting inside the tunnel, construction of concrete road and construction of flyover at Balambu's CSIPD is in the final stage.

Now more than 10,000 vehicles pass through the Nagadhunga road section every day. The construction of the tunnel is being done by the Japanese company Hazma Endo Corporation. The total contract amount of the tunnel is 22 billion rupees. In this project, Japan has a concessional loan of 16.5 billion rupees. The Government of Nepal has invested 6 billion rupees in this.
