Even though the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RASWPA) said that he had resigned from his post, central member Mohanjung Thapa was active in party activities until he was detained in the US. He was arrested on February 5 by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Philadelphia International Airport in the state of Pennsylvania on charges of fraud.
After the news about the arrest was published, the RSVP has been saying that he has been prosecuted by the party and that he is not involved in party activities.
Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha claimed that central member Thapa had informed the party that he would be out of the responsibility of the central committee member.
"Mohan Thapa had already submitted a request saying that he would clarify and solve some personal legal process and stay out of the responsibility of the central member until that end," Jha said. Despite Jha's claim, before going to America, Thapa participated as a representative of the party in the program of Nepali Liaison Department held in Qatar on February 16.
According to a central member of RSWP, he was participating in the party meeting. That central member said, "Sometimes he used to sit alone in the meeting and leave". But there is no information that he was officially brought to the central member. According to the central member, before going to Qatar, he also participated in the district meeting of the party held in Myagdi.
Thapa, who lives in Baltimore, Maryland, returned to America from Nepal on February 16. CBP arrested him and handed him over to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who was living in the US after obtaining a green card. He is being held at the Philadelphia Federal Detection Center. Immigrants who have completed the legal process and are living in the US are kept in such a center if they are found to be involved in criminal activities.
Thapa was suspended from central membership in 2080 . The then MP Dhakakumar Shrestha of RSVP demanded Rs 3 crore from medical practitioner Durga Prasai saying that he had to pay money to the party to make him a minister, and the party dismissed him from the post of MP .
Shrestha gave an interview to the media and alleged that Thapa, a central member of the party, had asked for money to entice him to become a minister. Thapa was also suspended when the then MP Shrestha was suspended for financial transactions.
