Prime Minister and former Prime Minister in a war of words

Those who made an agreement with the king to spread democracy are actually the messiahs of democracy! When did you fight for the republic? Didn't you make an agreement with the king? Shameless people like that will give us a shout about democracy? - KP Sharma Oli, Prime Minister

Lately, there has been a trend of throwing mud at each other between the Prime Minister and the main opposition leader Oli and Dahal. Oli accused Dahal of being a "monarchist" and Dahal accused Oli of being anti-federal democratic republic. It seems that accusations are made between the two leaders rather than an ideological debate.

Looking back, there is more discord than unity between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The Dahal-led Maoists broke the alliance with the Congress and cooperated with the Oli-led UML a year ago, but it did not last more than two months. Since then, seven months ago, after the Congress-UML collaboration, Dahal, who joined the opposition, and Oli, who is leading the government, have been going on a 'war of words'.

According to the communist principle, there should be 'unity after struggle', but between these two top leaders of the Communist Party, there is a relationship of 'struggle over unity'. Lately, after becoming the prime minister and the leader of the main opposition, the trend of throwing mud at each other has intensified between Oli and Dahal. Oli accused Dahal of being a "monarchist" and Dahal accused Oli of being anti-federal democratic republic. It seems that accusations/counter-accusations are made between the two leaders rather than ideological debates.

Prime Minister Oli, while addressing the party meeting in Dang on Monday, accused 'Dahal of conniving with the king'. So much so that he accused Dahal of trying to destroy democracy. Those who went to establish democracy by making agreements and alliances with the king, made agreements under compulsion. On the contrary, the Messiah of democracy! When did you fight for the republic? Didn't you make an agreement with the king?' Oli asked, 'Such shameless people will scold us about democracy.' I want to say to Prachandaji, don't talk like that. Don't expose many things, conspiracies.'

Last December 15, Dahal reached Oli's home district Jhapa and mentioned that he was 'Jellie' and accused of being 'anti-federalism'. "The current prime minister is a fake, quick, hypocrite, dishonesty of the country. So fake, so fake people. I am speaking in his place,' he told Oli, 'There is nothing else in his mind except confusion.' KP Oliji does not like federalism, inclusive, proportional, giving rights to women and Dalits. Oliji is the man who said that the Maoists brought a storm, I also had to accept it," he said in the Jhapa meeting, "He is a man who accepted the federal democratic republic under compulsion. Whenever he comes to power, he tries to tear this constitution. Because some rights of women, tribals, Madhesi, Muslims, Tharu are established in this constitution. He doesn't like that. Want to dissolve it.'

Oli also refuted Dahal's statement that he was removed when he reached Dang and tried to open corruption files as 'slander'. "The country's biggest robber has been spreading bad news that he was removed from the Prime Minister when he tried to open corruption files," Oli said, "The Prime Minister does not have corruption files. I am also the Prime Minister. I don't have it.'' He also sought to dismiss Dahal's argument that the government would collapse on its own. "I will be the prime minister for 17 more months, no need to use force to remove KP Oli," he said, "when the time comes, I will leave myself, until the time comes, the prime minister will not fall even if no cannon is fired, after 17 months, there is no need to use force." In the meeting of the House of Representatives on January 18, Oli commented that it was indecent to sing the song "The opposition has collapsed, the government has collapsed". Friends in the opposition seem to have wasted their time. A song is popular in the market called Dhalen Dhalen. I hear political leaders sing like this, 'Aday dhalyo, bharey dhalyo, dhalyo, dhalyo, dhalyo'. Oli said, 'This song is not suitable for the stage of politics. It is better to sing on Manaranjan's stage.'

Dahal responded to Oli's statement in the Parliament meeting on January 24. "Today the Prime Minister sang a song in the Parliament - Dhaleen, Dhaleen, Dhaleen.... If you have faith, should I keep saying day after day that I will leave Sher Bahadurji after all these months? Have to say it everywhere? Don't Sher Bahadurji listen?' Dahal said, 'Listen, we don't walk around to pick but this government is going to rot and fall.' "Prime Minister KP Oliji can't tolerate anything other than opposition, even constructive criticism. This is a proven fact time and time again. If he can, he wants to make the whole country very free from questions, very free from criticism and especially very free from conscience like his party (UML)' Dahal alleged, 'My question is, Nepali Congress. What is this Social Media Regulation Bill? Yesterday you stood against it. where are you today Are you cooperating only for power or has the political approach itself changed? Dahal said that the Congress also wants a question-free and conscience-free Nepal like Oliji?' "There is no need to keep singing the raga of transfer of power every day in fear of us, there is no need to keep swearing that I will leave Dharadharma in these days," Dahal alleged, "The Prime Minister sometimes reminds two-thirds of the Parliament and boasts of a strong government." How strong is this government in practice?'

Oli has been saying that he will hand over power to Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in the coming June. But Dahal reached Taplejung on January 18 and claimed that the government would fall on its own. "Even if we don't do anything, this government will collapse, it will collapse as we walk, no one needs to do anything," he said, "Our leadership was trying to do good work, but the broker capitalists did not stay, thinking that we cannot rise as long as Prachanda's leadership remains, we formed an alliance overnight by running hotel after hotel." The UML, which led the government, has been refuting the accusations of the main opposition in the House and on the streets, while the Maoists warned. In July 2065, Dahal became the Prime Minister as the leader of the largest party, but left the government after nine months when he tried to take action against the then Chief of Army Staff, Rukmangad Katwal.

Since his sudden resignation from the Prime Ministership in May 2016 until he cooperated with the UML to form the previous government, he has turned left and right like many byroads. Dahal, who had formed an electoral alliance with UML in the run-up to the general elections in November 2074, came to unite the party with UML on May 3, 2075. Less than three years later, the power struggle with Oli intensified. He divorced Oli after the Supreme Court separated UML-Maoist. Then Dahal divorced UML President Oli in February 2077.

Looking back before that, Dahal left the race for the prime ministership in the parliament in January 2067 and made the then UML president Khanal the prime minister after failing to get a majority for the prime ministership for 17 times. At that time, he had claimed to have formed the government on his own strength. The then Congress President Sushil Koirala, who was outside the Maoist government, made UML President Oli the Prime Minister in October 2072.

Dahal brought down the Oli government in June 2073 after having a disagreement with Oli. Then came to cooperate with the Congress. Dahal himself became the Prime Minister for the second time in collaboration with the Congress in July 2073. After resigning on May 10, 2074, Deuba became the Prime Minister.
