KIIT apologizes after all-round pressure, students await return environment

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, has apologized to the students and parents for the investigation into the suspicious death of a Nepali student and the suppression of the students who demanded justice.

After Prakriti Lamsal, who was studying in the third year of B-Tech, was found dead in the hostel on Sunday evening, the university administration repressed the Nepali students while demanding investigation and justice.

The Nepali students who protested demanding justice were ordered by the administration to leave the hostel immediately. KIIT has apologized after all-round opposition to the incident and increased pressure from within Nepal as well as India. After the university apologized, the 'situation of tension' between the university administration and Nepali students is becoming normal after the suspicious death of Nepali student Lamsal. 

The founder, vice-chancellor and registrar of the college have expressed their grief over the situation and apologized. After that gradually Nepali students started returning to college. Achyut Samant, the founder of the college expressed his grief over the incident in a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba and Nepali Ambassador Shankar Prasad Sharma in New Delhi and promised to address the issues and educational problems raised by Nepali students.

"He has expressed his commitment that all the demands raised by the Nepali students will be met as far as possible," Ambassador Sharma said. He has also committed to re-examination and extra classes.' 

The Nepali Embassy in Delhi sent two consuls to Bhubaneswar on Tuesday morning to understand the incident and create a comfortable environment by coordinating with the college administration, students and local administration. Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Sharma and Senior Superintendent of National Investigation Naveen Adhikari of Consular Nepal Police have met with all the parties.

Ambassador Sharma said that the situation became normal after the college administration accepted all the demands raised on behalf of Nepali students. According to Consul SSP Sharma, the security issue of Nepali students has been discussed with all parties. The college administration and the police have expressed their commitment in this regard. "Students have started returning gradually," he said, "as many students have gone home, it may take some time for them to return." Till Tuesday evening, 60 students have returned to the hostel.

According to a student studying at KIIT, Indian student Adhik Srivastava repeatedly abused Lamsal. They say that Lamsal committed suicide because he could not bear the abuse. After the death of Lamsal, the situation became tense when the KIIT administration repressed the students who went to the administration demanding action against the Indian students by deploying university security guards and bouncers.

After that, the university administration issued a notice to all the students to leave the hostel immediately. More than 500 Nepali students were taken to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack railway stations by the university. But after all-round protests, the university administration was forced to withdraw the decision. 

University Vice-Chancellor Sharanjit Singh also issued a statement on Tuesday and apologized for the incident on Monday. "We want to reiterate our commitment for the safety, dignity and welfare of all students, including Nepali students," he said. In the statement, it is said that the comments made by two officials of the university towards Nepal and Nepali students are irresponsible and they have apologized. The comments made by the employee in a fit of rage are personal. The organization does not support those comments," the statement said. 

The university has fired three security guards who assaulted a Nepali student on Monday. Odisha Police Commissioner Dev Dutt Singh said that another security guard was arrested along with them. On Monday, two hostel officials and one official of the International Relations Office were suspended for abusing Nepal and Nepali students. Manjusha Pandey, an employee who made irresponsible comments about Nepal and Nepali students, posted a video on social media and apologized.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued a statement saying that the Odisha state government has formed a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the KIIT incident. "Necessary action will be taken based on the findings of the committee," said the statement.

 A Nepali student studying in B-Tech third year also said that the situation is improving. "After we were expelled from the college, the most stress was on our parents," he said. However, you are not sure. The Nepali students have put forward 7 points of demand, including a fair investigation into the incident, dismissal of the staff involved, legal action against those who beat the students from outside, and compensation to the victimized students. The college administration has made a commitment from conducting re-examination to conducting additional classes in case of missing due to returning home. The embassy has promised to bear the ticket expenses of those forced to return home. 

An employee of the university who came in contact with Kantipur said that the situation is returning to normal and the students have started returning to the hostel. "Some students have already boarded the train to return to Nepal," he said, "other students are returning." According to him, there are currently 1,196 Nepali students in the university. According to him, Nepali students have started studying in the university since 2001. He claims that such a tense situation has arisen for the first time in more than two decades. 

The autopsy of the deceased Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal's body has been done. Preparations are being made to send the body to Nepal on Wednesday along with the family members. Father Sunil, who reached Bhubaneswar after his daughter's death, told Indian media ANI that he hoped to get justice after the investigation. It is said that the incident is being investigated. We need justice," he said.

Odisha Police Commissioner Devdutt Singh has assured the safety of Nepali students in a meeting with Nepali officials. He has promised to investigate the Nepali student Lamsal death case without leaving any stone unturned. 

Various student organizations in Nepal have also demonstrated against the death of a Nepali student and the subsequent incident. Various student organizations in India have protested the incident that happened to Nepali students in Odisha. A demonstration was also held in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday against the incident. Similarly, a question has been raised in the Odisha Legislative Assembly regarding the incident. 

Ministry of Education's warning to stop 'NOC' in Odisha

The Ministry of Education has warned to stop the Foreign Study Permit (NOC) if the incidents and problems in KIIT University are not resolved justly. The spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Shivkumar Sapkota, issued a statement on Tuesday and said that the NOCs being provided for studies in universities and educational institutions of the state of Odisha can be stopped. The Ministry has also established a help room to help students who are in trouble there.
