The tension has increased after the suspicious death of a Nepali student studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the Indian state of Odisha. After Prakriti Lamsal, a B-Tech third year student, was found dead in the hostel on Sunday evening, Nepali students demanded investigation and justice.

According to Nepali students, Lamsal was repeatedly abused by Indian student Adhik Srivastava. They say that Lamsal committed suicide after becoming unbearable. Earlier, Lamsal had also filed a complaint against Srivastava in the university administration saying that she had been abused. However, Nepali students say that the university administration did not listen to the complaint.

The Nepali students said that the KIIT administration repressed the students by using security guards and bouncers, demanding investigation and action against the misbehaving Indian students. The Nepali student went to the international relations office of the university to file a complaint on Sunday night. "But let the action be taken, we were not even heard," a Nepali student studying computer engineering said to Kantipur on the phone.

After the news of Lamsal's death came out, Nepali students protested. The news of Prakriti's suicide was spread in the university at 4-5 pm on Sunday. After that, he was taken to Kim's Hospital," said a Nepali student. He said that after the demonstration started at 10 pm, there was extreme oppression on the students. On Monday morning, everyone started to be expelled from the hostel. I was going to the mess to have lunch, the warden said you should go back home,' he said, 'Those who refused to go were beaten by the security guards.'

After the students' protest escalated, the university administration issued a notice to all Nepali students to leave the hostel immediately. In the notification issued by the registrar of KIIT, Nepali students have been asked to leave the hostel immediately until further notice.

More than one thousand Nepali students are studying in KIIT. Hundreds of Nepali students were stranded after the university's notification. A student who came in contact with Kantipur said that some students had already traveled to Nepal. According to him, the university brought more than 500 Nepali students to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack railway stations and left them. He said that they were stuck because the train coming towards the Nepalese border runs only on Thursdays. According to those students, some have made their own arrangements and stayed outside the hostel.

After the news of the expulsion of Nepali students came out, there was pressure on the university administration to recall them. After the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi communicated directly with the university through diplomatic channels, the college administration has issued a notice to the students to return to the hostel.

The Nepali Embassy has said that it has spoken to the representative of the university regarding the incident and asked them to adopt security arrangements for Nepali students. We are talking to the university administration after getting information about the incident. "We have drawn the attention of the relevant agencies to the investigation of the incident and the safety of the students," said Surendra Thapa, deputy head of the embassy.

According to the Indian media, Srivastava has been arrested by the police and an investigation into the incident has started. NDTV reported citing Deputy Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Police Pinak Mishra that a case of abetment to suicide has been registered against him.

The university administration issued a statement on Monday evening asking Nepali students to return to their dormitories. "The KIIT administration is making every effort to normalize the situation in the campus and hostels to resume academic activities," the statement said, "All Nepali students who have left the campus or are planning to leave are appealed to return to the hostels and resume classes." The university claims that Nepali students have been advised to return home to prevent the situation from getting out of control and to ensure a fair investigation.  The educational institution related to

has also given a commitment to the embassy that Nepali students will be accommodated in the dormitory and conduct classes. The embassy has issued a statement and informed about this. Deputy head of the mission Thapa said that he has requested the college administration to recall the students, conduct studies and conduct a fair investigation into the incident of the death of a Nepali student.

In the statement issued by the Nepali Embassy, it was also stated that the relevant educational institution has taken seriously the issue of independent and impartial investigation of the incident. The embassy has also called the representatives of KIIT in Delhi and held a discussion at the embassy. According to the statement, the embassy is in constant contact with the Ministry of External Affairs of India, the Office of the Chief Minister of Odisha and other relevant agencies. Deputy Head of Mission Thapa said that as soon as the information about the incident came to Odisha, coordination was done with all the students, college administration and government agencies. The embassy has also published email and hotline numbers for Nepali students and parents to contact in case of need.

A student said that the college administration is sending notices to the students to return to the hostel. "After the activation of the embassy, they have started coming in contact with us," said the student, "We have been expelled after insulting them." There should be an environment to live with respect and safety.'

He said that the students were kicked out by beating and using force, on the contrary, the college is saying wrongly that the Nepali students left the hostel voluntarily. After being expelled by the college, many students are heading home with whatever means they can find. Hundreds of students are staying in railway stations and hotels.

Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy Thapa said that two senior officials of the Embassy are going to be sent to Odisha on Tuesday. He mentioned that efforts will be made to create a comfortable environment by coordinating with the college administration and students. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has also said that he is understanding about the incident through diplomatic channels. It has been reported through the media and social media that a Nepali student died in the hostel of KIIT University and Nepali students were forcibly evicted from the hostel. The government is working on this issue diplomatically and in contact," Prime Minister Oli wrote on social media.

Similarly, Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba has also instructed the Nepali Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, to understand the reality of the incident and solve the problem of the students, according to his secretariat. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issued a statement on Monday evening and expressed its grief over the incident. Likewise, the embassy said that it has received information that the investigation of the incident has been started, stating that it is in constant contact with the university administration and Odisha government.

'We were oppressed'

The university administration repressed the Nepali students after the protests escalated with the incident of Prakriti's death. More than one thousand Nepali students studying at different levels participated in the demonstration. As the protests escalated, the founder of the university instead of trying to appease the students took the path of suppression. After they got the support of local students as well, the college administration started oppressing the Nepalis.

Not only college guards, but also bouncers from outside were threatened in the hostel room since morning. Threatening warnings to leave the hostel started coming. They started taking out the goods, if they protested, they were beaten. The university bussed one group after another out of the college premises. It started to be delivered to the railway station from early morning.

Hundreds of Nepali students are stranded at the railway station. Not even a train ticket was found. Some students took the train. Most of the students are stuck at the railway station without prior planning how to get there. The students have also stayed in the hotel in groups. We never thought that we would have to be expelled from the college that we have been studying for four years. We have been treated inhumanely.
