Mayor Acharya suffered severe burns on many parts of his cheek and left hand, while Minister Paudel suffered burns on both his hands and his face when the balloons fell during the opening of Pokhara's annual program on Saturday. They were given initial treatment in Pokhara and brought to Kirtipur Hospital in Kathmandu on the same day by helicopter.
The organizers said that this accident happened because the balloon was filled with hydrogen instead of helium gas. At the inauguration, the balloon burst due to the flickering candle lit by the minister himself.
Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an 8-member investigation committee under the leadership of Chief District Officer of Kaski, Bharatmani Pandey, to investigate the truth of the incident. After the Pokhara incident, questions have also been raised about the safety standards of public events.
