The Online TV Journalist Association of Nepal has protested in Kathmandu demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Social Media Bill 2081.
The President of the Association, Jeevan Bhandari, said that some of the provisions in the Bill would take away the right of the citizens to warn and criticize, so they demanded their withdrawal. He also warned that the bill would be torn up and disobeyed if it was not withdrawn immediately.
The participants in the demonstration at Maitighar Mandla held placards with slogans such as 'Government is keeping its mouth shut, democracy is being hacked, the right to criticize, it cannot be taken away, be careful, curb expression, the government is becoming autocratic'. The
association has decided to hold programs ranging from collecting signatures to protesting and submitting memorandums to withdraw the bill. Expressing solidarity towards the
demonstration, civic leader and senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi accused the government of bringing an ordinance to suppress criticism and caution. He claimed that if there is democracy in Nepal, there will be no such bill and if such a bill comes, there will be no democracy.
