BJP won 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly, Aam Aadmi won 62 seats in the previous election, and Congress lost 22 seats.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP has won two-thirds of the seats in the Delhi assembly elections. The BJP has won 48 seats in the 70-member assembly. With this victory, BJP will form the government in Delhi after 27 years.
Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi (AAP) has shrunk to 22 seats. Taking the broom as an election symbol for cleaning up corruption, it won 28 seats in 2013, 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020. BJP, which won only 3 seats in 2015 and only 8 seats in 2020, has secured two-thirds this time.
Arvind Kejriwal, who has been the chief minister of Delhi for three times, has been defeated by BJP's Pravesh Burma by a margin of 4,089 votes. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has also been defeated. He was defeated by BJP candidate Tarwinder Singh Marwah in Jangpura constituency. The current Chief Minister Atishi has won. She defeated BJP's Ramesh Bidhudi by 3,500 votes.
Regarding this victory of BJP, Prime Minister Modi has said that it is a 'victory of development and good governance'. "I bow to my dear sisters and brothers of Delhi for this honorable and historic mandate," Modi wrote on X. He says that BJP will leave no stone unturned in the development of Delhi.
The Indian National Congress, which is the main opposition party at the centre, did not win any seats. Taking a dig at this, Modi has said that the country's oldest political party is failing in the capital itself. "The country's oldest party has failed to open its account six times in a row in the Indian capital," Modi said while addressing workers at the BJP headquarters.
He has also said that there will be an investigation into Kejriwal's drinking case. Your leaders, who entered politics saying they would change politics, drowned in corruption, their declarations have been proven wrong. The party born to fight against corruption has sunk into it today, the chief minister of this party has been jailed today on corruption charges,” said Modi.
The Congress, which ran the government in Delhi continuously from 1998 to 2013, was expelled from Delhi after allegations of corruption. With that, the people of Delhi brought AAP to the government. But after 10 years, the election results have shown that people have abandoned AAP and preferred BJP.
Delhi Rajya Sabha election was made a matter of BJP and its prestige because it is the capital of the country. The BJP, which has been out of power in the capital since 1998, won the result in its favor by throwing the ruling party.
Earlier, after achieving expected success in assembly elections in states including Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, the BJP put all its might into the Delhi elections. Central leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, were frequently seen at election rallies in Delhi. Recently, as the election competition in Delhi intensified, he accused his BJP of tampering with the voter list, distributing various materials when the code of conduct was implemented, etc.
AAP chief Kejriwal has accepted the election defeat and congratulated the BJP. "We accept the verdict of the people with complete humility," said Kejriwal on social media.
The lieutenant governor appointed by the central government has decision-making powers in matters such as public order, police and land management in the capital Delhi. The state has the right to make decisions about education, health and public services. Since the central and state governments belong to different parties, there are frequent disputes over the use of rights.
This is why Delhi's election slogans seem to focus more on welfare issues than politics. In this election as well, both BJP and AAP parties strongly raised issues such as free healthcare, improvement in education in government schools, allowances for women.
Some provisions of the budget introduced by the Modi-led BJP government only last week seemed to be aimed at the Delhi elections. The BJP had introduced an election-centric budget that gave tax breaks to middle-income earners. The BJP estimated that it would benefit in the Delhi assembly elections because of the high population of middle-income people in Delhi.
Kejriwal came into limelight in 2013 by defeating former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit. In 2015, Kejriwal won with 64.14 percent votes. In 2020, he got 61.1 percent of the votes. In the 2013 elections, the people of Delhi supported the welfare issues put forward by Kejriwal, and AAP emerged in Delhi politics.
AAP won 62 seats in the 2020 Delhi assembly elections. BJP won 8 seats. It won 67 seats in the 2015 elections. BJP was limited to 3 seats. Lately, Kejriwal and senior leaders of his party have been accused of corruption. Kejriwal was jailed before last year's Lok Sabha elections in India.
He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with irregularities in Delhi's liquor policy. After the arrest, the opposition party criticized the Modi government for misusing the agency to target the opposition.
Kejriwal was released on bail on September 13. But the Chief Court barred him from returning to the Chief Minister's office and making a decision. Four days after his release, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister.
Kejriwal formed the government in 2013 with the support of the Congress. Later, he left politics by raising corruption and other issues against the Congress. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he again participated in the Congress-led 'India' alliance. After the alliance did not bring positive results, he stood alone in the Delhi assembly elections. AAP had to leave power due to lack of alliance with Congress.
Pravesh Burma who defeated Kejriwal
47-year-old Pravesh Burma is the son of former Chief Minister of Burma and former BJP Vice President Sahib Singh Burma. After defeating the AAP chief, his name has also come into the limelight as the chief minister. "The party will decide on this, if they make me the Chief Minister, I will fulfill their demands," Pravesh said about his chances while talking to "The Indian Express" during the election campaign last January.
His supporters put him forward as the chief ministerial candidate in the election campaign. The slogan 'Delhi's CM Kaisa Ho, Pravesh Barma Jaisa Ho' became very popular. Burma said 'Let's remove Kejriwal, save the nation'.
In the election campaign, he has promised to build a riverfront on the Yamuna river like Sabarmati, give houses to the slum dwellers, build infrastructure, government jobs for 50,000, flyover and pollution free national capital.
Burma, who was elected to the Delhi Assembly in 2013 from Mehrauli, has been a member of the Lok Sabha for two terms since 2014. Burma, who has been active in the BJP for three decades, started his election campaign in mid-January last year. Before that, he visited different places to find out the needs of the locals living in slums in New Delhi.
"Many people of Jhuggi Jhupadi (JJ) have not got free water and electricity, I want to say this openly, those who are getting clean water and free electricity, please vote for Kejriwal, those who don't get it, vote for BJP," he repeated repeatedly in the election meeting. There are about three lakh JJ families in Delhi, India. A large number of them are in New Delhi assembly constituency.
last December accused Burma of giving 1100 rupees to each woman to buy votes. Burma replied that he was helping them through his father's organization. During his election campaign, Burma also raised the issue of the Chief Minister's official residence. He also kept a model of the Chief Minister's residence, which the opposition called 'Shismahal', outside his residence. "Kejriwal has not done anything for Delhi in the last 11 years, while you all were dying of covid, Kejriwal was busy building Shismahal for himself," Burma said at the election meeting.
