Central Member of Nepali Congress and Head of Education Department Nainsingh Mahar has said that democracy is incomplete without freedom of press and expression. He said that since the Congress is a follower of the democratic system, freedom of expression and freedom of the press are also essential for the survival of democracy.
Leader Mahar objected to the introduction of a law to curb the freedom of expression in the name of preventing the misuse of social media. He said this while talking to reporters at Bhairahawa Airport on Wednesday.
'Congress will not agree to anything that will frustrate it, disrupt it, restrict it and cause problems. The government has drafted a bill and registered it in the National Assembly to prevent the abuse of social media and to regulate the platform. They should be able to understand the meaning that freedom of speech and press is necessary to save the entire democratic system,' he said. He said that the Congress will not compromise with anyone on these basic issues of democracy.
He said that the role of the press is paramount in the direction of informing citizens in the modern world. 'Democracy is the lifeblood of Congress. Freedom of speech and press are linked to the lifeblood of democracy. We are very aware of this. He said, "The Congress is involved in the government under this or that pretext, and as the largest party in the Parliament, the Congress does not give meaning to these types of bills."
