CPN Ekta National Campaign Coordinator and National Assembly Member Vamdev Gautam's return to UML is uncertain. The central secretariat meeting of UML held last Tuesday concluded that although there is a theoretical agreement to bring Gautam into the party, there should be no haste.
The Secretariat had decided to 'cooperate with Gautam's National Unity Campaign'. However, the position he will get has not been decided. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, who talked with Gautam, also said that there will be immediate cooperation only. "There is no question of Vamdevji UML entering," he said, "Now we have only decided to cooperate."
Gautam said in a conversation with Kantipur last Sunday that he is going to return to UML to work till he dies with honorable responsibility. Gautam and his team were preparing to enter the UML after the talks with the United Socialist Party failed. But after the decision of the UML Secretariat, Gautam's team is confused.
UML Senior Vice President Ishwar Pokharel said that the door is open because Gautam has a strong desire to join UML. Pokharel said that only the legislative convention to be held in August can create new positions in the party as per the constitution of UML. "According to the law, there is no situation to create posts immediately," he said, "as per the law, there are positions and responsibilities in the party." How to cooperate with UML? Why did the issue of cooperation come up again when it was agreed to do unity?' He said, 'We have said that we should not talk about confusion.'
On February 23, 2077, after the Supreme Court decided to annul the UML and Maoist unity, Gautam was left alone. He was in a small group by forming the Communist Unity Campaign.
Gautam said that he will join UML on the day he is called. After the split of CPN, UML President Oli was not interested. Although there were preparations to join the unified socialist party, no agreement could be reached after Gautam asked for 'executive responsibility' at the last moment.
77-year-old Gautam's entry into UML is unlikely to revive his old legacy, but it may be a deception to introduce himself as the leader of a big party. He has been a member of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly for seven times and has been the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister three times.
When there was an extreme power struggle between the two presidents of the CPN, Oli and the Maoist president Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who formed a unity between the UML and the Maoists, Gautam Dahal took sides. On the recommendation of the then CPN government (KP Sharma Oli Cabinet), the then President Bidya Devi Bhandari nominated Gautam as a member of the National Assembly in October 2077.
