At the age of 18, Imansingh Gurung went to India to be in Lahore after being invited by his relatives. Took two months of training. Indian Army Recruitment Opened, Contested. But if they failed, they could not be recruited. He went to Lahure to make his parents happy and came to his house in Dordi rural municipality-8 Hilletxar Mazhagaon.
Neither she nor the family knows who brought it home. The villagers started to 'chew' him as he became mentally deranged. It seemed to be fine after wearing Dhamijankri, but after a few days it was the same again. For treatment, the family took him from a hospital in Kathmandu to Ranchi, India, but he was not cured.
The family sensed a 'trouble' as his abnormal behavior increased. Under the pressure of the society, he was bound in iron chains. His days and nights began in the open shell of the house next to the goat pen. He was chained for about 31 years and his family members used to drink his urine. His right hand was tied to an iron chain with a nail like a cow.
4 years ago Manav Seva Ashram Bensishar rescued him from that chain. After the care and treatment at the Ashram, there was a very positive change in him. 53-year-old Imansingh Gurung returned home from the ashram only a few days ago.
Comedian Manoj Gajurel himself became Imansingh and presented the video of Imansingh's story to the then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. His presentation was about the situation where many 'Imansinghs' are being imprisoned in Sikri across the country due to lack of awareness and education that mental illness can be cured by giving a tablet medicine. The video of Emansingh Bane Gajurel can be found on YouTube.
Gajurel wrote on Facebook with a photo of Emansingh's family reunion saying, "Imansingh Gurung of Lamjung was mentally unwell." Had to sit in chains for 31 years. The reason was poverty and illiteracy. I presented the story of Iman Dai a while back. Iman dai and I watched that video together. At that time he said, I will return home soon.'
Gajurel further wrote, 'Manav Seva Ashram Lamjung, who was rescued four years ago, recovered Iman Dai and reunited him with his family. Many thanks to Manav Seva Ashram and its activists. Congratulations to Iman Dai. Best wishes to the family. Kudos to the beautiful minds who have helped directly/indirectly.'
Iman Singh was born in 2028. His brother Veniram Gurung says that the family chained him to stay close to him and look at his face when treatment was not possible. Anita Adhikari, then coordinator of Manav Seva Ashram Lamjung (currently head of Gandaki province) said that Imansingh was rescued on 18 November 2077 while still chained.
'Imansingh Dai became insane due to the disdain of the society, illiteracy and poverty as well as lack of treatment. We kept him for four years, gave him a family environment with love and affection, gave him medical treatment,' she said, 'After he was healthy in every way, we had a family reunion.'
The ashram reached the house of Hilletxar Majhgaon on December 19 and entrusted it to elder brother Veniram and sister-in-law Double Kumari Gurung. Among their 4 siblings, Imansingh is the youngest. Maila lives in the village and Saila lives in the valley. Their 6 sisters are all married.
Mentally deranged, not talking to anyone, angry, attacking, Imansingh now speaks well and socialises. Sometimes they hum songs and make jokes. Memories of being chained have come. However, I am not sure how many years I spent like that. He says, 'It will be like that for 2-4 years.' He sometimes looks at each other and teases.
'People who were tied with iron chains because they couldn't bear it, today I am happy to call them brothers and sisters-in-law,' said Veniram. Imansingh's sister-in-law Double Kumari said that only after coming home did Imansingh come to know about the death of his parents. After coming home, my parents asked, we said that my parents were not there. The younger one is feeling namazja, she said.
When Imansingh was chained, his parents died 10-12 years ago, 2 years apart. According to Veniram, before her death, the mother used to talk about the younger one. Mother used to say that everyone's life will not only have sorrow, but it will also lead to happiness one day. We are happy that the younger brother has got a new life,' said Veniram.
