At least 53 people have died in an earthquake in Tibet, China. According to the Chinese media Xinhua, the death toll from the earthquake in Dingri County, China's Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning has reached 53.
According to Xinhua, there are initial reports that 62 people were injured.
According to local time on Tuesday morning, an earthquake occurred in Dingri county center of China's Xizang Autonomous Region near the northeastern border of Nepal. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, China's official agency for measuring earthquakes, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at 9:50 a.m. local time. According to the center, the origin point (depth) of the earthquake is 10 km.
According to CCTV, there are 7 villages around 5 km from the epicenter of the earthquake. Similarly, there are 2 cities around 20 km from the center. Videos and photos of the collapsed buildings due to the earthquake have also been released. According to Chinese media, relief and rescue teams have been deployed in the earthquake-affected areas.
The US Geological Survey reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.1. Nepal's National Earthquake Measurement Center has reported that an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude has occurred. Along with various districts of Nepal, there have been reports that the earthquake was felt as far as Thimpu in Bhutan, Bihar in India and Bangladesh.
Earlier in 2008, at least 70,000 people died when an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude occurred in China's Sichuan Province. Similarly, on 12th Baisakh 2072, around 9 thousand people died in the Gorkha earthquake of 7.6 magnitude in Nepal.
