AI regulation within a month: Minister Gurung

Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvisubba Gurung has said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be regulated within a month.

Speaking at an interaction organized by the Telecommunication Authority on Friday in Pokhara regarding the current situation, quality and challenges of telecommunication services in Gandaki province, he said that the government will bring a strategy related to AI within a month.

'Until now, there is no policy or strategy related to AI in our country. We will pass the policy and strategy within one month," he said. "After making the policy and strategy, we will make a law based on it. The strategy will talk about how to use AI with education, how to use it with health, how to use it in the modernization of agriculture, how to use it in the development of the economy, how it will be effective in the government sector, banking sector, industry, forest and environment, climate change He said that AI will play an important role in the field. He said, "It is important to create opportunities and increase the production and productivity of this country to the maximum extent possible by making an AI law." 

He said that he did not know about Elon Musk's Starlink coming to Nepal. Stating that a representative of Starlink has come to meet him, he mentioned that Starlink will come only if the Nepal government gives permission. "We are not trying to come to a small country like Nepal because there will be a lot of profit, there is some strategy," he said, "We know what kind of person Elon Musk is." We know what kind of people he is politically. He is known as the richest man among traders. A rich person is going to run IT, is an oil trader, or is going to sell land.' 

He said that the constitution will not be amended in the basic principles of democracy. Stating that there will be no debate on constitutional amendment regarding federalism, republicanism, secularism, and inclusive proportionality, he said that a discussion should be held between the parties to amend the constitution regarding the rights of the union, state and local levels. He said, "We are not in favor of forcing two-thirds of the population without national consensus."
