A five-member committee has been formed under the coordination of Narayan Prasad Dhakal, Director General of the Department of Drug Administration, to ensure that the generic name is compulsorily mentioned by doctors and health workers when prescribing medicine to patients.
It has been arranged that there will be representatives of Nepal Medical Council and Nepal Medical Association along with Prof. Dr. Ravi Shakya, Director of Patan Institute of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Balram Malla, Director of Dhulikhel Hospital, as members of the Generic Medicines Suggestion Committee. Usha Tandukar, senior manager of quality measurement and regulation division, has been assigned as the member secretary of the
committee.
In the Public Health Service Act 2025, it is mentioned that doctors and health workers should write the generic name when prescribing medicine. However, it was not implemented. Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel said that if generic names can be recommended, consumers will be able to purchase medicines at reasonable prices and the availability of medicines will be easy. "Nowadays, doctors write the brand name of medicine, so consumers are forced to pay expensive fees and buy medicines of the same company," he said.
