On Monday, the Supreme body of Kathmandu University (KU) discussed the matter of including the failed students in the grace list and awarding the academic degrees through the convocation ceremony.
Registrar Achyut Wagle informed that in a meeting held at the office of Prime Minister and Chancellor KP Sharma Oli in Singhdabar, he was informed about the error in the convocation program. Those students were not passed by adding numbers. By mistake, their names were included in the grace list. Those students don't even understand the degree certificate by wearing the gown,' said Wagle, 'We informed the senator about this.' We have formed a committee to investigate what led to the error due to negligence or malice. Then we will know the details," Wagle said.
KU has formed an inquiry committee and started studying about the names of students who dropped out in the middle of their studies and failed in the examination and got academic degrees from the convocation ceremony. According to KU, a 3-member investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of the dean of the School of Law for the investigation. Panna Thapa, pre-examination controller and Birendra Bahadur Lakh, co-director of pre-examination are members of the committee. KU spokesperson Ekkumaya Pun informed that the executive council has formed a committee as there is a need to investigate and study to prevent such weaknesses from occurring in the future. The committee has been given a period of one week to submit the report.
Spokesperson Pun has issued a statement saying that the names of 8 students who have not completed their degree and who have left their studies in the middle have been included in the grace list. Kantipur published the news on Sunday that it was decided to award academic degrees to 7 failed students at the convocation ceremony held on November 29 in the presence of Prime Minister and Chancellor Oli. The executive council meeting held on Sunday formed an inquiry committee. KU has also informed that Registrar Wagle has instructed to conduct an internal investigation on the matter. During that time, CN Khadga, an officer working in the examination control office, admitted the mistake and gave an explanation, according to KU.
In the explanation given by Khadga, it has been mentioned that the names of students who have not completed their degree in BBA program or who have dropped out in the middle have been mistakenly included in the grace list. He has written, "With serious apologies for the mistake, I request to remove those names from the grace list and destroy their degree certificates." He has also submitted a list of 9 students. Khadga, in his explanation letter written to the Controller of Examinations, admitted that the names of the ineligible students were also included in the list as the details were sent without updating the details of the students. He also promised not to repeat the mistake by saying that he will work with the data again and again in the future. According to the sources, Khadga has been involved in such careless and abusive work before, so he is a person who has been alerted and put to work. KU has been claiming that the student received the academic degree from the convocation ceremony but did not receive the certificate.
The Senate sitting in the presence of Prime Minister Oli has also formed a committee to resolve the long-term dispute between KU and Dhulikhel Hospital. The committee was formed under the leadership of Ramkanth Makaju, Head of Dhulikhel Hospital and Bhola Thapa, Vice-Chancellor of KU. KU has been conducting medical education programs since its inception through an agreement with the hospital. A member of the Assembly said that a committee consisting of representatives from the two organizations was formed to resolve the dispute between the two entities regarding the implementation of the agreement.
