Maheshraj Dahal, the then Nepalese ambassador to Australia, who was called to Nepal before completing his tenure about two and a half years ago, complained that he was not able to complete many of the works he had started. While returning to Nepal, Dahal said that even if the appointment is political or diplomatic, the ambassador should not be used for political interests.

As soon as there is some change in the Nepali political circle, the ambassador post has become the first target of the party. Instead of appointing and sending a person who has studied the country and has knowledge about the Nepali community and the local economy, diplomacy and politics, the practice of appointing the ambassador by distributing it among the parties has become common.

It has become common for those who come as ambassadors to worry that sometimes the political equation of Nepal will change, sometimes the position will be vacated and they will have to return to Nepal prematurely. .

With the latest political change, Kailashraj Pokharel, the last ambassador of Australia, has returned to Nepal before completing half of his tenure. While he was being appointed as an ambassador to Australia, he expressed his belief that although he came to Kantipur as a political appointment, he will work for the full term as he has diplomatic experience. But his faith also  With the formation of a new government and a new equation, it was broken within 25 months.

The government has already appointed Nepali Congress leader Chitralekha Yadav as a new ambassador for this country under political appointment. After her Agrimo has been approved, she will come to Australia in the next few days . But with her being an ambassador, she will also face the challenges of various problems here.

The problem of Nepali students studying in Australia is not only that Yadav has a challenge to strengthen the trust of the embassy with the growing Nepali multicultural community. On the other hand, it will be a challenge for him to timely establish the mistrust and expectations towards the embassy that have been growing in recent times .

It will also be a challenge for him to diplomatically address the instability caused by the tradition of changing ambassadors every two years since the term of the past three ambassadors. Not only that, it will be a challenge for him to start the construction of the building, even after half a decade of purchasing the land for the construction of his own embassy building, there has been no progress.

Yadav has the same opportunity. He was able to complete the trade agreement between the two countries concluded a few years ago, the secretary-level mechanism and the preparations for Nepali aircraft to fly from Australia.

Although there was a trade agreement between Nepal and the Australian government in February of this year, the businessmen here are ignorant about what benefits Nepal has gained from it. In the current situation where there is a loss of trade between Nepal and Australia amounting to millions of dollars, Ambassador Yadav has the opportunity to take diplomatic initiatives to improve the trade loss.

However, the Nepalese here are in a 'wait and see' state of mind as to what Yadav can do regarding the fact that none of the political appointees so far have been able to serve their full term.

Mahendra Kumar Lamsal of Sydney, who has been working on the ministerial advisory committee of the central government of Australia, claims that because Australia is at the bottom of the index of good governance and poverty, the approach to Nepalese ambassadors is different compared to ambassadors of other countries.

He told the Nepalese ambassador that strengthening the diplomatic trust and relationship will be both the main challenge and opportunity. "Due to various reasons, the Nepalese ambassador is not given that much value diplomatically," said Lamsal, "this is the main challenge of the new ambassador." ; He suggests that the embassy and the new ambassador should promote and work with Nepalis who have a good political and economic status here. As Australia has moved forward with the mentality of 'people and business', he says that the Nepalis, who number more than 2 lakh, should also be taken into this state of mind.

'It will be both an opportunity and a challenge for the ambassador to strengthen not only the hope and trust of the Nepali people here towards the embassy, but also the diplomatic trust of the government here.'

Ambassador Chiranjeevi Devkota, president of ENJA, a common organization of journalists in Australia, says that the ambassador should work effectively based on his knowledge and experience to provide stability. He says that even though more work can be done between Australia and Nepal diplomatically, politically and commercially, the instability of the Nepalese ambassador's post is the main problem of the ambassador coming here.

Since 2008, 5 Nepalese ambassadors have been appointed to Australia. In which only Rudra Kumar Nepal, who came to handle the responsibility of ambassador at the diplomatic level in the year 2012, was able to complete his full term. Yogendra Dhakal, the previous ambassador to Nepal, had completed his tenure of more than 3 years. However, apart from that, none of the Nepali ambassadors who came to Australia as political appointments since 2017 were able to complete their two-year term .

Sherpa and Dahal were able to hold the responsibilities of ambassadors for only 19 months, while the current ambassador Pokharel also took a leave of absence in about two years . The Nepali people here have been raising their voice for a long time to give diplomatic appointments and even if they are given political appointments, they should work for a full term. .
