Kedarbhakta Mathema, an educationist and former Vice-Chancellor of Tertiary University, has said that the operation of profit-making colleges should be stopped. While making suggestions on the College Education Bill in the Education and Health Committee of the Parliament, he asked the MPs to consider whether to allow business in the education sector.
'Privatization is increasing in education. Students are absent from public schools. It is getting weaker,' he said. He pointed out that education has not moved towards the speed and direction it was supposed to move towards. Mathema questioned why the state has invested in public schools and why they have not been of good quality. He says that the goal of socialism will not be achieved by running profitable private schools. He also emphasized that
teachers should not be allowed to do politics. "Teachers and professors cannot get involved in politics, their opinion is their right, but they should be kept away from politics," he said. He said that the teachers should be accountable to the school management committee and arrangements should be made to run the school through the board of trustees model. The committee is taking the suggestions of experts before discussing the bill.
