US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu has said that the US will continue its current policy regarding Asia and Nepal even under the Trump administration. Lu, who is on a two-day visit to Nepal, said in an interaction with the media on Monday that America will not change its policy in Nepal and the Asia region.
He said that it is good to implement the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project with 500 million US dollars in energy and road infrastructure development together with the political parties of Nepal. Under the MCC project, there will be employment opportunities for 10,000 people in 10 districts. Nepali and other foreign companies are working on it. Lu said, "It is better to implement the MCC project in Nepal together." He expressed the hope that officials will be appointed soon in the commissions that will edit the transitional justice. He also said that America wants to see Nepal have good relations with its neighboring countries.
Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Lou Biden visited Nepal towards the end of the administration and before the start of the Trump administration. He had a meeting with Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist President Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Sunday. On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel and Prime Minister KP Sharma met with Oli's chief advisor Bishnu Rimal.
In the meeting with Paudel at the Ministry of Finance, he discussed financial support, effective implementation of projects under MCC and USAID, development finance, investment in the private sector, etc. Paudel requested that since there is political stability in Nepal, the main priority now is economic prosperity and for that, the American assistance to Nepal should be expanded further.
Assistant Foreign Minister Lu expressed his happiness that even though some countries in South Asia are facing economic problems, Nepal has succeeded in maintaining economic growth and stability. He informed that America is in favor of providing more financial support to Nepal in the coming days. In the meeting with Rimal, there was a discussion on topics of mutual interest and the possibility of further strengthening Nepal-US relations.
