Matrika Dahal, journalist of Kantipur Dainik, has received the 'Anti-Corruption Champion Award (ACCA)' established by the US government. US Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken presented Dahal with the prestigious anti-corruption award on Monday afternoon local time in the capital Washington DC.
The US President Joe Biden's administration established 'ACCA' in 2021 to honor people who have made outstanding contributions in various professions with the goal of maintaining good governance around the world while strengthening the anti-corruption campaign. This award is given by the Ministry of External Affairs. For the year 2024, 10 people from different countries have been awarded with Dahal. Armenia's Minister of Law Sarbuhi Galyan, Uganda's Professor Jimmy Spier Esentongo, Gambia's Social Activist Marr Nyang, Albania's Attorney Altin Duvani, Lebanon's Judge Karl Irani, Kazakhstan's Attorney Didar Samagulov, Colombia's Lt. Col. Jorge Mora Cortes, and Panama's Attorney General Javier Enrique Caraballo. Salazar also received respect for his strong work against corruption in his country. It was informed in the program that despite being selected for the
award, the activist from Azerbaijan was arrested and imprisoned by the government for fighting against corruption. Kantipur Karmi Dahal received the award for exposing various 'high-profile' cases of corruption, including the crime of taking Nepali people as fake Bhutanese refugees to America. Dahal said that receiving the international award has given him more strength and encouragement to move forward through journalism against corruption and state exploitation.
Dahal reported in order to force those involved in the land scam case of Lalita Niwas to be brought to justice. In February 2080, the Special Court found 136 people guilty for filing a case against those involved in the embezzlement of the land of Lalita Niwas by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority in January 2076. Following Dahal's reporting on the issue of fake Bhutanese refugees, high-ranking people including the then deputy prime minister, former home minister, incumbent secretary, parliamentarian were arrested during the investigation. The case related to that is under consideration in District Court Kathmandu. Dahal also reported on gold smuggling, embezzlement of Patanjali's demarcated land, the much-publicized cooperative fraud case, and the scam that took place in purchasing weapons for the police and armed police. At the
award ceremony, Benjamin Cardin, a member of the US Upper House Senate, former US Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that although it was not easy to fight corruption, the recipients of the ACCA award acted courageously. This award was received by 11 people in 2023, 8 in 2022, 12 in February 2021 and 12 in December.
