After informal two-day talks between high officials of Nepal and China in Beijing, the 'BRI Cooperation Framework' was finally signed during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's visit to China. Along with this, it has now been confirmed that Nepal will officially proceed with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which was initiated by China and signed in 2017.
After the bilateral talks between Nepal's Prime Minister Oli and China's Prime Minister Li Qiang on Tuesday, after a vote was reached on whether to keep the word 'grant' or not, The framework was signed again on Wednesday.
Bilateral informal talks that started on Monday morning ended on Tuesday. And, both sides have agreed to sign the BRI cooperation framework," said a senior government official in dialogue with the Chinese team to Kantipur. "Initially, the Nepali side had drafted the framework called 'Grant Financing Cooperation Modality'. After that, the Chinese side removed the word "grant" and returned the draft to Nepal by keeping only "accidental financing modality". But in the end, the Nepali side offered 'ad assent financing' instead of grant or assent. It has been agreed upon.'
Prime Minister's economic and development advisor and Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba, who is in the visiting party for an agreement with the Chinese side, spoke on behalf of Nepal. From the Chinese side, high officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were involved.
