The Election Commission has instructed the political parties to give preference to women in the by-elections of the local level chief or deputy chief to be held on November 16.

The Commission has instructed the political parties to nominate women as candidates in the by-elections for the vacant posts if men are working in the positions of chairmen or vice-chairmen of rural villages, heads or deputy heads of municipalities and heads or deputy heads of district coordination committees.

Information Officer of the Commission, Suman Ghimire, said that the Commission has given such instructions in accordance with Section 67 of the Local Elections Act, 2073. That is why the Commission has instructed women to be candidates in the by-elections for vacant positions held by men at the local level, where by-elections are held in accordance with the spirit of the law,' he said.

The Local Election Act requires political parties to elect local leaders or  It has been made mandatory to nominate a woman for one of the two positions while nominating for the post of Deputy Chief. But such an arrangement is not mandatory when applying for only one of the two positions.

Ghimire, information officer of the commission, said that the commission has issued such instructions in accordance with section 67 of the Local Elections Act, 2073 in the absence of clarity in the law.
