Meeting between Oli and Modi in New York: Agreement to activate the bilateral mechanism

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in New York. In the meeting, it was agreed to address mutual issues by activating bilateral mechanisms. During the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, a "sideline" meeting was held at the Lotte Palace in New York. After the meeting, Prime Minister Oli responded that the talks were positive.

The meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly was fruitful. In the meeting, we discussed various aspects of bilateral relations,' Oli said on social network X. 

Indian Prime Minister Modi has mentioned that cooperation in various fields has been discussed. India-Nepal friendship is very strong. And, there is a desire to make it stronger in the future. Our discussion was on issues like energy, technology and trade," Modi said on social network X.  Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba, who participated in the

meeting, informed that there was an agreement to resolve mutual problems by activating bilateral mechanisms. Foreign Minister Deuba said that Modi's visit to Nepal was also discussed on that occasion and he informed that he will visit Nepal soon. According to him, both sides have been asked to make necessary preparations for Modi's visit. Even though Foreign Minister Rana Bhadau was visiting India in the first week, she invited Modi to visit Nepal. The

meeting was attended by Prime Minister Oli from Nepal, Foreign Minister Rana, Prime Minister's Political Affairs Adviser Bishnu Rimal, Foreign Secretary Seva Lamsal, Representative and Ambassador of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York Lok Bahadur Thapa, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Amrit Kumar Rai and others. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Vikram Misri were present along with Prime Minister Modi from India. After the

meeting, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rai informed that the bilateral meeting has helped to further strengthen the atmosphere of trust between the two countries. According to a statement issued by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi during the meeting congratulated Nepal for becoming the 101st country to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as a full member. In addition, Modi also emphasized the importance of regional response to the challenge of climate change. After becoming the Prime Minister for the fourth time, this is the first meeting of Oli with the Prime Minister of India. 

Prime Minister Oli also met with Kuwait's Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled and Bhutan's Prime Minister Chiring Tobge on the 'sideline'. According to the delegation, there was a discussion about strengthening bilateral relations during the meeting. The interaction program scheduled to be held by Prime Minister Oli and Foreign Minister Rana with the Nepali community has been postponed.

The program was scheduled to be held in New York on Sunday evening. Although the preparations were completed, the program had to be postponed as Prime Minister Oli was busy with the UN General Assembly, 'Summit of the Future' and other 'sideline' meetings at the last moment, according to the Nepali Consulate General in New York.
