The government has transferred 150 prisoners from three prisons in Kathmandu Valley to the central prison in Nuwakot. In particular, one and a half hundred prisoners who have been convicted by the court for serious crimes including murder, rape, drugs, and killing industry have been transferred to the central prison built in Nuwakot.

According to the plan to transfer prisoners to the building that has been completed in Nuwakot, one and a half hundred prisoners have been transferred from the valley in the first phase, according to the Prison Management Department.

Jainarayan Acharya, Director General of Prison Management Department said that 1,370 prisoners can be kept in the completed blocks and 150 prisoners have been transferred now.

According to him, inmates will be transferred from different prisons and other prisons in Kathmandu valley in the completed structure and the transfer will be done keeping in mind the pressure of Kathmandu as the first priority. Under which there is a plan to take another 500 prisoners from the prison in Kathmandu.

The government is constructing a central prison building in Khampacamp (Chandipokhari) area located in Vidur Municipality-6 of Nuwakot. The master plan for the construction of the prison structure at a cost of about 7 billion rupees has been made, so far only the work up to the second phase has been completed. According to Kamal Pandey, director of the

department, a structure with a capacity of 1,370 people has been built under a structure costing about 2 billion rupees. Among them, 150 prisoners from three prisons in the valley have been transferred to the completed block.

According to the department, one block for women and 4 blocks for men have been prepared and the number of prisoners to be transferred from Kathmandu has been decided by evaluating the crime, punishment period and the type of person involved in the crime.

2070 Chait 20  The cabinet meeting decided to build a prison in Vidur and operate it as a central prison in order to reduce the number of prisoners in the prisons of the valley. The number of inmates/detainees in the women and men buildings of the Central Jail complex at Sundhara (Jagannathdeval) is more than 3,600.

Among them, the number of prisoners who are serving their sentence after the court has reached the end of the case is more than 2000 . In Dillibazar, the total number of prisoners/prisoners is about 750 and the number of the final judgment of the case is 3,450. Similarly, there are 1,550 prisoners in Lalitpur's Nakkhu Jail, and 833 of them are serving the final sentence. According to the

department, the number of people who have been sentenced or released by court order is decreasing every day, so the number of prisoners is decreasing daily.

Kathmandu's prisons were dilapidated and overcrowded, forcing the inmates to live in cramped conditions. After all the structures of Nuwakot prison are built, the government target is to make it 7000 capacity. For that, 620 acres of land has been included in the prison complex.

After the construction of the prison structure in Nuwakot, this problem will be solved and only a small number of inmates have been transferred to the blocks that have been constructed, said Acharya, the director general of the department. The structures of the prison under construction include 30 buildings including detention center, dining room, workshop, security agency barracks, prison office, toilet, hospital, and school. Out of which there are 5 structures with residences and offices of security personnel.

Since the budget has been allocated for the construction of prisons since 2071/72, there was a government plan to build a structure within 2077 and proceed with the work of prisoner transfer . However, due to the fact that the construction work did not proceed within the specified time, the completion period was pushed, so only the second phase of the work has been completed so far.
