Minister of Communications and Information Technology Prithvisubba Gurung has said that the government is in favor of freedom of the press. During the discussion on the Media Council Bill, 2080 in the Legislative Affairs Committee under the National Assembly on Monday, Minister Gurung made it clear that the government has no intention of curtailing the freedom of the press through the said bill.

In the meeting of the committee, he highlighted the purpose of the bill and said that the bill was introduced to make the press world dignified, orderly and strong. Minister Gurung made it clear that an autonomous body separate from ministries and departments is being operated to regulate, self-regulate, relate and promote the press.

'We all believe in the freedom of the press . We have come with all our commitments. The ministry and the government are in favor of this', he said, 'if there is any doubt that the ministry will restrict the freedom of the press, I want to assure you that we all have full faith in the freedom of the press . Don't question our intentions.'
