In the Betalghat area of Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India, there was a dispute between wage laborers on whether to go home to celebrate the New Year late on Monday evening - whether to go on Monday or Tuesday. In this, one/two people searched for a vehicle and started loading the goods. It was already 10 pm by the time everyone put everything from clothes to utensils.

Hark Bahadur Giri and Prem Bahadur Budha of Bansgadhi Municipality of Bardia were the last to board the jeep. All of a sudden the jeep started, but fell into a pit without going any further. 8 people including 7 Nepalis died when the jeep fell 200 meters down into the gorge. Two people were seriously injured. Giri and Budha saved their lives by jumping. "We were not able to climb well," Giri said on the phone, "I jumped and escaped, my arms and legs are injured."

8 people including the driver died in the accident. 7 of them are Nepalese. Although it is initially assumed that they are from Bardia and Banke, the exact address has not been identified.  According to

Giri, the deceased are 40-year-old Top Bahadur Basnet alias Gopal, 50-year-old Vishram Chaudhary, 40-year-old Antram Chaudhary, 55-year-old Uday Chaudhary, 38-year-old Vinod Chaudhary, 45-year-old Tilak Chaudhary and 45-year-old Dheeraj Chaudhary.

According to the Nainital police, Antaram, Vinod, Udaya, Tilak, Dheeraj and Top Bahadur have been identified till Tuesday evening. The injured Shanti Chaudhary and Chhotu Chaudhary are being treated at Tiwari Government Hospital in Haldwani.

17 people from Banke and Bardia reached Betalghat in search of work after sowing wheat. They were taken by Prem Budha. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it snows in winter

could not be a regular job. Five people returned a month ago after working for 40 days. Another 11 worked only 70/72 days. The remaining 11 also tried to come a week/ten days earlier. But the contractor could not come due to non-payment of wages. "We still haven't received the wages, we are going to come with the fare to reach home," Giri said, "Besides the New Year, it was also time to harvest wheat, that's why we were going to come, some friends stayed on the road, some were in the hospital."

Uchakot is 18 km east of Betalghat. The Nepali workers had booked a Bolero jeep to reach Haldwani, which is 70 km away, from Uchakot via Bhavali. Betalghat police station in-charge Anis Ahmed said that even though they had everything from clothes to utensils, they were "not very loaded". According to him, it is assumed that the jeep may have suddenly become uncontrolled as soon as it was started because it was stopped on the slope. Driver Rajendra Kumar is a local.
