The bulldozer will be used again from Sunday to remove structures that are within the road boundaries of the main road area of Birgunj Metropolitan City.
The Road Division Office, Hetauda, has started the second phase of the campaign to remove structures, seeking necessary assistance from the Birgunj Metropolitan City. The Road Division Office, Hetauda, wrote to the Birgunj Metropolitan City on Ashad 20, requesting assistance in removing the remaining permanent and temporary structures located within 25-25 meters on the right and left sides of the road from the Sirsiya-Miteri Bridge to Bahuari Gandak Chowk along the Tribhuvan Highway.
According to Nawaraj Phuyal, press advisor to the Mayor of the Metropolitan City, Rajeshman Singh, the Road Department had earlier given a deadline of five days to the homeowners to remove the remaining structures themselves. If the structures are not removed within the stipulated period, the department had warned that it would remove them itself as per the Road Act, 2031.
On April 6 and 7, the Roads Department had used dozers in the first phase of the main road area. In the process, the front part of most of the structures was demolished, while the concerned were urged to remove the structures located in the road boundary area within 25 days. However, after many structures remained intact even after the deadline, the department has launched the second phase of the campaign.
In a notice issued by the Roads Division Office, it stated that the road boundary protection campaign has been underway since April 6 and that it has received information that residential and commercial businesses are still operating in partially damaged buildings. The department has urged people not to live in such buildings as they are risky and not to operate commercial businesses. The department has also clarified that if any untoward incident occurs due to disobeying the notice, the concerned person will bear full responsibility.
After the first phase of the dozer campaign, some homeowners demolished structures within the road boundaries themselves, but most of the buildings in the main market areas including Ghantaghar, Maisthan, Adarshnagar, and Alkhiyamath are still intact, the department says.
