Ponds and reservoirs in Janakpurdham have been decorated for the Chhath festival. The ponds have been decorated in preparation for the Chhath festival, which is set to officially begin tomorrow (Saturday).

For Chhath, ponds and reservoirs including Gangasagar, Aragja Sagar, Dasharath Talav, Dhanushsagar, Matkorwa Pokhari and others in Janakpurdham have been decorated with pandals and electrification. Gangasagar Chhath Committee Chairman Hari Narayan Gupta said that the ghats have been decorated in a more systematic manner than in the past. According to him, every year devotees bring Argha materials from home and decoration work is done at the respective ghats. Currently, the work of setting up pandals is underway at Gangasagar Ghat, while the work of twinkling lights is yet to be done. Three committees are working on the decoration work at Gangasagar.

Similarly, Birendra Karna, secretary of the committee that is constructing the Chhath Ghat at Aragja Sagar, said that preparations began immediately after Dashain. According to him, the number of workers has been reduced for cleanliness and sanitation. Karna informed that not only Hindus but also some people from the Muslim community participate in this pond.

There has also been an increase in activity in the market to buy and sell materials for the Chhath festival.

The four-day Chhath festival is officially starting tomorrow (Saturday). During this four-day festival, devotees have to fast without food or water for two days. The first day of this festival is ‘Nahaya-Khay’ on Saturday. On the second day, ‘Kheer’ is made and eaten at night after fasting for the whole day. This method is called ‘Kharna’.

Similarly, the third day, Monday, is considered the main day, in which dishes made from the flour of agricultural grains such as Thekuwa, Bhuswa, etc., along with banana ghari, clay pots, soup, Kansupati, Kalash with urn etc. are arranged in a clean and sacred manner. Arghya is offered to the setting sun in the evening. On the fourth day, Tuesday, the festival concludes by offering Arghya to the rising sun in the morning.

On the occasion of Chhath festival, the Union government has declared a public holiday on the main day of the festival, while the Madhes state government has declared a holiday for the entire state on the next day, that is, the fourth day.
