The Nepal Medical Council has formed a high-level committee to investigate the incident of a woman losing her life while undergoing an abortion at a health clinic in Butwal.
Taking the incident of 29-year-old Geeta Pandey, who died while visiting a clinic, seriously, the council has formed a six-member investigation committee at the request of the deceased's relatives.
On Wednesday, the council formed a six-member committee under the coordination of Samrat Parajuli as per the decision of the Professional Conduct and Health Committee. The high-level team includes gynecology and obstetrics specialist Prof. Padmaraj Pant, Dr. Rajendra Basyal, Dr. Anup Panthi, legal expert advocate Govinda Marasini and civil society representative journalist Dinesh Pandey.
The team has been given a mandate to conduct on-site monitoring and inspection at the concerned health institution in Butwal and to find out the truth about the incident. The council will proceed with the investigation process in coordination with the local District Administration Office and Nepal Police. The council has stated that action will be taken as per the prevailing law if found guilty.
