The family has demanded action against the negligence of a private clinic for the death of 29-year-old Geeta Pandey of Baganaskali Rural Municipality-2. Pandey had gone to Butwal from Palpa for an abortion due to her unwell baby, and died during treatment, the family said.

Pandey died while undergoing treatment at three private clinics in Butwal. Last Saturday, she went to Khatri Nursing Home in Butwal for treatment along with her husband Prakash Pandey.

The family has said that the health workers used medicine to induce the abortion. After the abortion failed, she was taken to the zonal pharmacy. After treatment was not available there, she was taken to the Indulekha Clinic. An attempt was made to induce the abortion using medicine. The family has said that she was finally taken to Lumbini City Hospital after serious health problems arose.

The doctor declared her dead when she was taken to the hospital. The family has registered a complaint with the Area Police Office demanding action against the private medical and clinic operators.

Soon after the complaint was registered on behalf of the victim, the police have arrested three medical and clinic operators. After Geeta's death, Prakash registered a complaint with the police office for appropriate action and was subsequently arrested, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Nishant Srivastava, Chief of the Area Police Office, Butwal. According to him, Sandhya Basnet and Neelam Ghartimagar of Zonal Pharmacy, and Khagendra Pandey of Indulekha Clinic have been arrested. The remand of all three has been extended on Tuesday and further investigation has been initiated.

Dr. DB Khatri, the operator of Khatri Nursing Home, and Dr. Satish Rupakheti of Indulekha Health Clinic were kept under surveillance by the police. Both of them arrived at the police office on Wednesday morning and are currently being questioned, said Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Area Police Office Nishant Srivastava. ‘Both doctors have now contacted the office on their own,’ he said, ‘We are questioning the details of the incident, both of them are currently under investigation.’ He said that the three people arrested on Tuesday are in police custody.

The body of the deceased Pandey has been kept at Lumbini Provincial Hospital, Butwal. The family has also demanded compensation for the offence of not treating a person without a license under Section 230 of Chapter 19 of the Criminal Code, 2074 BS. The family has said that they themselves examined Geeta during the treatment and kept all the documents after she fainted.
