An investigation team was formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the instructions of the then Prime Minister Sushila Karki to investigate the incident where a father and daughter committed suicide over not being granted citizenship. The team reached the spot and investigated. However, the victim's family complains that justice has not been served as no action has been taken against the culprits.

The victim's family says that it is sad that no action has been taken against those involved even after a long time since the team from the Ministry of Home Affairs returned to Kathmandu. The team formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs had rushed to the spot to investigate the case of forcing people to commit suicide by depriving them of citizenship. The team had questioned the victim's family, Ward Chairman Naray Thapa of Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality-4, and the district administration. However, locals allege that the culprits were being protected by not taking action against those involved in not granting citizenship.

Anju Tharu, 22, of Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality-4, Dakshin Bhakari, who was neglected by her husband, did not receive the share awarded by the court as the ward and district administration did not grant her citizenship. Anju committed suicide at home on November 22 due to discrimination, while her father, 61-year-old Kanchha Tharu, who had been fighting for justice, also followed his daughter's path four days later.

'Citizenship discrimination against women: The state did not provide justice, father and daughter gave their lives' Kantipur Daily mentioned that the then Prime Minister Karki drew attention to the matter on November 20 after the news was published on November 19.  Under the direction of Prime Minister Karki, a three-member investigation committee was formed under the coordination of Home Ministry Joint Secretary Suresh Panthi, including Deputy Home Secretary Kulshekhar Aryal and Bardiya Assistant Chief District Officer Bhandari.

On December 19, Bardiya Assistant Chief District Officer Ashok Kumar Bhandari, a member of the investigation committee, had submitted a 35-page report to the government after conducting an impartial investigation into the incident. He revealed that the report mentioned the weaknesses seen from the ward to the administration in depriving the deceased Anju of citizenship after investigating the truth of the incident.

Suman Kumari Tharu, sister-in-law of the deceased Anju, said that she was saddened to hear that the culprits had not been taken action after a long time since the Home Ministry team returned from the investigation. "I was hoping that justice would be served when the ministry team reached the house for investigation after the female Prime Minister showed interest," she said. "But, nothing has happened so far. I hope that the new government will bring those who forced my uncle to choose the path of death without granting citizenship to them to face action." When the Home Ministry team reached the ward, the death registration of Anju, who did not get citizenship, and the birth certificate of her seven-year-old daughter Anita Tharu had been completed. After the death of her mother, Anita is currently staying with her maternal uncle. Anju's husband Anil Tharu is currently in jail awaiting trial in a suicide abetment case. The bench of District Court Judge Dalluram Chaudhary had ordered Anil to be remanded in custody for trial on Poush 23. Chief District Officer Gogan Bahadur Hamal said that a circular has been sent to the Badhaiyatal-4 ward office for the land that Anju's daughter Anita will get from her father. ‘The problem is that Anita’s father’s property has not been transferred for 3 generations,’ said Pradya Hamal, ‘However, he has not received a report on taking action against those who deprived him of citizenship, and there has been no information from the Home Ministry.’
