Mukt Kamalari has celebrated Gurhi, an important festival of the Tharu community, with great pomp. On Tuesday, Mukt Kamalari from different districts of West Terai who gathered in Dang collectively celebrated Gurhi festival.
It is customary for women to throw small cloth dolls that children play with on the ground and men beat them with a stick with green leaves as a symbol of illness. After throwing dolls in the square of Tharu village, it is a custom to share and eat various vegetable dishes cooked from home.
The Tharu community calls the singing insect Gurhi kiera . The Tharu Agua says that there is a tradition of celebrating the festival after the end of farming so that insects do not spread in the crops and diseases do not spread in the village. The Tharu caste is considered to be nature-worshipping. Gurhi is worshiped because he believes in nature. The singing worm eats mosquitoes and rice insects. They say that this festival is celebrated because singing insects protect crops by eating insects.
Hiramoti Chaudhary, central president of Mukt Kamalari Vikas Manch, said that this festival is celebrated with the belief that children do not get diseases. Usually, girls and teenagers celebrate it, she said, "This festival is celebrated so that children do not get diseases". Gurhi is celebrated in different ways in different places. On the occasion of Gurhi festival, three local levels of Dang gave a public holiday on Tuesday.
