Journalist and short story writer Basant Parajuli's novel 'Bakhan' has been awarded the Martyr Shiv Prasad Poudel Memorial National Award.
Sahitya Sangam Chitwan recently honored Parajuli with a cash award of Rs 20,000, a citation and a certificate during a function organized in Bharatpur.
According to the organization's vice-chairman Chirag Bhandari, Sahitya Sangam Chitwan has previously honored 14 writers. At the program, writer Uday Adhikari presented a brief introduction to martyr Shiva Prasad Poudel and recalled his sacrifice during the 2037 BS student movement.
The speakers at the program stated that the novel 'Bakhan' established local issues at the national level and expressed the view that the work carries the social reality of Chitwan.
Professor Dr. Karna Baniya said that it presents a beautiful confluence of journalism and literature by narrating real events. According to him, although the first chapter of the novel is a bit complicated, the flow of the story attracts the reader from the second chapter onwards.
On the occasion, writer Balkrishna Thapaliya, Bharatpur Metropolitan City Academy Council member Prakash Chapagain and others praised the work.
After receiving the award, writer Basanta Parajuli said that this award has inspired him to further refine and improve his writing.
He mentioned that he has transformed real-life experiences and conversations with elders into narratives.
Literary writer Anil Sharma ‘Birhi’ said that ‘Bakhan’ reflects its importance by linking past sacrifices with current movements and achievements.

Meanwhile, the ‘European launch’ of the novel ‘Bakhan’ has been held in the city of Antwerp, Belgium.
Nepali Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union Sewa Lamsal, Central Vice President of the International Nepali Literature Society (ANESAS) Dilli Ammai, ANSAS Europe Co-Coordinator Pancham Adhikari, ANSAS Belgium President Saurabh Karanjit, former presidents Bimal Giri, Dipendra KC, writer Brahmadatta Wagle, NRN Association, Belgium President Kamal Panthi, and others launched the book.
At the event, Ambassador Lamsal expressed her happiness at the opportunity to launch a book on the historical aspects of the novel as well as the history of settlement development in Chitwan.
