Poet Prakash Budhathoki, a campaigner for the historic 'Hunger Poetry Movement', was presented with the 'Mundhumi Mangena Award' on Saturday.
Kirat Mundhum Pratishthan, Damak-Jhapa, appreciated his contribution to the field of Nepali poetry, literary movement and social consciousness, and honored him according to traditional Kirati cultural methods.
The honor was given in the presence of Nepal Academy members Pragya Sumitra Bangdel 'Cheli' and Munaraj Sherma. As a token of respect, Budhathoki was offered a perungo phaxa (pork) and a katwa sinjawa (alcohol) after tying a turban on his head.
Budhathoki began his poetry journey around 2034/35 BS. In 2039 BS, after poet Bhavani Ghimire led the street poetry revolution in Jhapa, the literary environment here became more lively. On Ghimire's advice and inspiration, the 'Hunger Poetry Movement' started from Jhapa, in which Budhathoki also actively participated.
After his association with Ghimire, poetry in Jhapa gained new energy and attracted the younger generation, especially towards literature. At that time, creators like Hira Akash, Krishna Dharavasi, Durga Dahal, Laxman Dhakal and others were part of that movement in Jhapa.
Budhathoki, who has crossed the age of seven, is still equally active in literature. Lately, he has been a strong advocate for identity literature. The image of the native world and consciousness are strongly visible in his creations.
Along with academic duo Bangdel and Sherma, the program was made memorable by poets and ghazal reciters including Virat Kirati, Bivas Balibhadra Koirala, Krishna Kashyap, Sailing KC, Deshu Vanem, Dilip Rai 'Sagar', Yug Yogi Rai, Khajum Khesehang, Nihang Kirati, Sangsen Pandhak, Maulasree Limbu, Abhagi Theguwa, Rumani Kurung, Rajkumar Uncertain, Vision Guragain.
