Gurung litterateur, linguist and cultural expert Pandi Indra Bahadur Gurung has passed away at the age of 92. He passed away on Thursday night at Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara while undergoing treatment.
Gurung, a resident of Gilung, Kholasothar Rural Municipality-9, Lamjung, was a deep scholar of Gurung language, customs and culture. In the Gurung community, a priest is called 'Paindi'.
Born on Bhadra 1991 to father Shirsubba Gurung and mother Charmakhu Gurung, Gurung was also an academic member of Nepal Pragya Pratishthan (2066-2070). He was the vice-president of the then District Panchayat Lamjung for two terms during the Panchayat period.

His works include Tamu Chi (Gurung Astrologer), Buddha and Bonpo Calendar, To Tan Sonfu (Three Things of the Past), Gurung-Nepali Dictionary, Introduction to Tamu (Gurung) Avasthal, Nal Sabha, the Basic Basis of Tamu State System, Tamu (Gurung) Cultural Guide, Serka Que (Serga Song), etc. Recently, only 3 years ago, he published three books simultaneously, namely Prerna, Gurung Pyaarvan Geet, and Shiva Dharma. Gurung Pyaarvan Geet was published by Nepal Pragya Pratishthan.
Gurung had received honors and awards from various organizations, including the Shubharajyabhishek Medal, Pragya Matrbhasha Sahitya Puraskar. He was also the president of Sarvodaya Secondary School in Duradanda, Lamjung, Ishaneshwor Secondary School in Bhorletar, and Budhodaya Secondary School in Gilung. He also contributed to the social and cultural fields as the founding president of the Chinese-Tibetan Astrology Foundation.
He had been unable to see or hear for a while. According to his family, he was suffering from asthma and was taken to Manipal Teaching Hospital Pokhara for treatment after he suddenly fell ill on Thursday. Doctors declared him dead at around 8 pm on Thursday. The family said that the body will be taken to the village only on Saturday after his eldest son Surendra Kumar Gurung returns from the UK.
He is survived by his wife Kashipiri Gurung, sons Surendra Kumar Gurung and Birendra Kumar Gurung, and daughters Hemmaya Ghale and Chandra Kumari Gurung. Gurung community leaders have said that the Gurung community has suffered an irreparable loss due to the death of Paandi Indra Bahadur Gurung, who dedicated his life to the preservation of Gurung language, customs and culture and to study and research.
