The English-language book 'Triumph and Tears', written by former British Gurkha soldier Shankar Rai, has been released. The book was launched on October 7 at the Empire Banqueting Hall in Aldershot Town, UK.
The book, which focuses on the 1986 Hawaii scandal in the British Army, has been launched by MP Alex Baker. Baker is the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group.
Author Rai, who participated in the famous Falklands War in 1982, was later honored by the British government. When a small incident at a farewell party after a joint exercise between American and British soldiers in Hawaii turned violent, he and 110 Nepali-origin Gurkhas were expelled from the British Army. After being expelled without compensation, many of the 110 soldiers became unemployed. He said that the book was named 'Triumph to Tears' based on this incident.
'We were expelled from the British army without any proper investigation, empty-handed,' says author Rai, 'We are still struggling against this injustice done to us.'
