Skincare has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Social media platforms like TikTok have popularized skincare as a lifestyle. Many people follow influencers on social media. They promote various products and suggest following a routine.

As soon as a product goes viral, many users want to use it immediately. According to the 10-step skincare routine, users are using cleanser, exfoliator, toner, essence, serum, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen all at once.

Dermatologists, however, recommend not using too many products. Skand Swar of The Kathmandu Post spoke to Dr. Shrujna Shrestha, consultant dermatologist and managing director of Absolute Aesthetic Clinic, about why people are using so many skincare products and the effects and effects it can have on the skin.

Should people adopt a 10-step skincare routine?

People who do not have any specific skin problems do not need to follow a 10-step skincare routine. The idea that using more products will make your skin look better is a result of social media and marketing, not medical reasons.

What is a minimum skincare routine for healthy skin?

Only three things are enough for skin care – cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Cleanser helps to remove dirt, sweat and oil from the skin. Moisturizer provides the skin with the necessary moisture and prevents it from drying out. Sunscreen protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Therefore, these three basic steps are enough for healthy skin.

Can too much skincare damage the skin?

When taking care of your skin, you should first understand your skin type and what problem you are trying to solve, and using too many products, especially products with ingredients like acids or retinoids, can weaken the skin's natural protective layer.

How do influencer recommendations contribute to excessive use of skincare?

Social media has played a big role in our beauty thinking and skincare habits. The tendency to buy and use products immediately on the recommendation of social influencers increases, which increases the tendency to make wrong choices without looking at them. Wrong use can cause negative effects on the skin such as pimples, allergies and blemishes.

How long does it take to notice the effects of using a new product?

To see the effects of a new skincare product, it should be used consistently, usually many products start showing results in 4-6 weeks. Frequent changes make it difficult to evaluate the effects and can cause irritation or pimples on the skin, so it is better to start only one new product at a time, which can easily detect any negative reactions.

Has using viral trend-based skincare damaged your skin or increased problems?

Yes, people following viral skincare trends have been experiencing an increase in skin problems, such as increased sensitivity, compromised immune system, and increased pimples/acne. Improper cosmetic use can lead to errors in product selection. People who do not understand the right ingredients and proper manufacturing techniques can create such problems.
