RCT: Modern treatment to protect teeth

There are three main layers of a tooth: the upper layer is enamel, the lower layer is dentin, and the innermost layer is soft tissue (pulp). A simple filling is sufficient for an infection that reaches the lower layer of dentin.

If a tooth infection cannot be cured with normal treatment, the nerves inside the root need to be treated, which is called RCT (root canal treatment).

The technology of performing RCT after the infection reaches the nerve of the tooth is now increasing. In this context, what is RCT? How is it done? Kantipur correspondent Prakriti Dahal spoke to Dr. Subash Ghimire at Om Samaj Dental Hospital in Chabahil on the following topics: What is RCT (Root Canal Treatment)? The full name of RCT is Root Canal Treatment. In common parlance, we also call it 'tooth filling'. But tooth filling and RCT are different processes. The three main layers of the tooth are the upper enamel, the dentin below it, and the soft pulp (pulp) at the innermost layer. A normal filling is sufficient for an infection that reaches the lower layer of dentin. But when the soft pulp of the tooth becomes infected and reaches the inside, then RCT is the process of removing that pulp and preventing the infection from spreading.

In what situation is RCT performed?

RCT is often done after a tooth starts to hurt or when it continues to hurt. In this, the root of the tooth is cleaned and filled, which is why it is also called a ‘root filling’.

How is RCT done?

First, the canal reaching the root of the tooth is completely cleaned, so that bacteria cannot grow again. Then, the root canal is closed using a special material called ‘gutta percha’. In the visible part, a filling material that matches the color of the tooth and does not crack when bitten is used. This makes the tooth look natural.

How long does it take?

Now, with the development of technology, RCT is done in two ways. Single-sitting RCT: The procedure is completed in a single day. Multiple-sitting RCT: It is done gradually over a few days. Depending on the technology and the condition of the tooth, it can be completed in 15 minutes, or it can be done over time if necessary.

Should I treat it again after RCT?

Generally, a well-done RCT does not need to be repeated. But since RCT involves making a hole up to the root of the tooth, the tooth becomes weak. Therefore, it is recommended to put a crown (cap) on top to prevent the tooth from breaking.

How much does it cost?

The cost varies depending on the condition of the tooth. In a normal case, it can cost between 3,000 and 4,500 rupees. If it is done quickly in a single sitting, the cost can double, which can reach up to 8,000 rupees.

Are there any risks in doing RCT?

There is no particular risk in RCT done by a good and professional dentist. But since the teeth become weak after RCT, there is a possibility of breaking if a crown is not applied. The teeth are safe when applied.

How to care for them after RCT?

You should pay attention to your diet after RCT. Eating in a hurry without paying attention, eating while using your mobile phone can cause problems with your teeth. We call this a 'meditative eating habit', that is, eating mindfully and comfortably. It is not only beneficial for your teeth, but also for your overall health.
