The Pathibhara Cable Car controversy, which has been dormant for some time, has resumed.
The issue of cable car construction was raised in a discussion organized by the Public Policy and Delegated Legislation Committee of the Federal Parliament, the National Assembly. The committee held a discussion between the parties and the opposition on Wednesday at the Phungling Municipality premises. During the discussion, the ‘No Cable Car’ group expressed their anger by warning that they would protest until their last breath. Khagendra Fembu Limbu, chairman of the Cable Car Abolition Joint Struggle Committee, claimed that they were continuing their protest against the cable car construction and would now make it stronger. He also urged the National Assembly members to support them as the state has severely oppressed the protesting parties. He said that the construction being carried out by ignoring the protesting parties would be a curse. The representatives of the ‘No Cable Car’ group, who had gone in the number of 25/30, were stopped by the city police on the first floor, asking only five to go in a representative manner. ‘The state has destroyed our culture by following a businessman.’ When we sought our rights, the state oppressed us. They shot us in the chest and thighs. They shot us from house to house. They filed cases in court and caused us pain,' Fembu told the lawmakers, 'We swear by Mukumlung Yumamang and Pathibhara Devi, we will protest according to democratic procedures and raise our voices as long as we have breath to protect our natural resources and biodiversity.'
Saroj Kangliwa Limbu, another activist of the 'No Cable Car' group and secretary of Kirat Yakthum Chumlung, claimed that the cable car built without the community's consent would not be completed. He urged the lawmakers to suggest that it would be appropriate for its investor Chandra Dhakal to withdraw the investment. Locals Kedarjung Tapmaden, Nabin Pomu and others warned the lawmakers not to allow the cable car to be built under any circumstances.
The meeting was led by National Assembly MP and Committee Chairman Madhav Prasad Sharma, and was attended by members MPs Renu Chand, Madan Kumari Shah 'Garima', Shree Krishna Prasad Adhikari, Gomadevi Timalsina, Sumitra BC, Rukmini Koirala and Narabahadur Bista.
Committee Secretary Sanjay Dahal had written to Phungling Municipality on Poush 11 inviting stakeholders to discuss the issue of Pathibhara and the cable car.
In the letter, the meeting of the National Assembly Public Policy and Delegated Legislation Committee held on Mangsir 1, 2082 had requested the municipality to invite stakeholders to observe the Pathibhara Devi located in Phungling Municipality and discuss with the municipality representatives the protection of the Pathibhara area and the construction of the cable car.
The municipality had invited the Pathibhara Area Development Committee, Pathibhara Area Development Committee, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, local administration and other bodies and the 'No Cable Car' group.
